Great - need a proper address to send the prize though - IIRC it's a bottle of Jameson 18 year old Limited Reserve.

Go to the wiki. It should still work fine since it's administraned by Neil and not DarkGod. I'm not sure about the mailing list.
Also, yesterday or day before that (I don't remember exactly) I got a strange email that might have been a social engineering attempt to gain commit rights to the CVS. I didn't bite.

should we contact pav then (on the angband site) he is the one who hosts this and he may be able to resolve this

Pav already knows, and has posted about this on the Angband forums. He has disabled DarkGod's account and thinks that the ToME forums will likely have to be taken down. I wouldn't want that to happen.

My god, there are some really really stupid nerds out there aren't there.

The world has lots of highly unpleasant people in it. Some of them happen to be nerds, that's all.

Can I ask for some definitive guidance on which forum is the long-term ToME forum?
If we're moving to angband.oook.cz, we should really do it - it is awfully quiet on the ToME forum over there.
If we're staying, it would be good to know. The hacking of darkgod's account made this place very quiet for a bit.
Any moderator opinions?
BTW, I understand we lost a lot of archived messages. Are they recoverable at all?

I pm'ed darkgod after it happened. He said that he would change his password, and since then nothing else bad has happened. As far as I can tell the vandals have gone off to cause trouble elsewhere.
At this point I think that these forums are stable. If anyone sees any more evidence of mischief on the forums let me know. I am still checking in almost every day.
I had hoped that there was a backup of the forum, but obviously nothing has been restored. Nerdanel says pav, who hosts this site, knows what is going on, but I don't know if she asked about a backup.

In reply to Nerdanel re: backups, Pav said on angband.oook.cz's ToME forum that only the last night's backup is kept:

Nothing's happened since Aug 27, so I'm not sure we'll be able to get old content - I've been using Google's cache by searching for stuff followed by site:forum.t-o-m-e.net to get stored pages.

I got tired of looking at the message left by those idiots. Also changed the topic title.

If you find something of general use, please re-post it here. The beginner's guides and things like that would be useful. If any OPs have copies of such they should post them also.
Most of the forum content over the years has been fairly repetitive, so it isn't really a great loss. We lost everything before about 2005 a few years ago and it didn't make much difference.

Probably not a loss for expert players but for instance I'm about to do the Wight quest (low level I know, I've played Angband / ToME for over a decade but don't get high up often) and looked up the forum.
As you recommend, I can repost if I find stuff of interest. Not being knowledgeable about copyright intricacies, I'd welcome any guidelines.

I can't imagine that there would be any problems in re-posting anything that used to be here. Nothing posted is under copyright. Tome itself is open source.
You might want to make sure that you include the original author's name. The post will show up under your name, but I don't think most people would object to seeing their pearls of wisdom reappear. Those of us who are a bit garrulous probably wouldn't even recognize them.
