Module development documents

#1 Post by FACM »

After looking over the document I wrote up yesterday, I realized I wasn't targetting anyone in particular with it, and that it wasn't of use to anyone. I didn't delete it, but rather I took part of it and refocused it towards module developers. I know the existing wiki has a couple guides on module development, but they're fairly incomplete, and rarely explained out the parts I wanted explained out.

My first one is here, a guide on making player descriptors. It breaks down everything the ToME module does with player descriptors, and how module developers can do the same to their own modules.

Feedback is appreciated, especially on correcting errors or assumptions I've made in my guide. I'd also like to make sure that this is the sort of thing that the community wants/needs, and that I'm not missing something better hidden behind some rock I haven't looked under yet.

This is exactly the kind of thing I'd like to see on the developer wiki. Nice work.

Now, if we can only get the powers that be to add a new DNS record to point to it so people can start using it. :?

or put it itself up on the wiki or here... :/ It is only 39,407 (20,593/60,000) characters less than the post limit for the forums (the wiki pages are immutable atm) so it could be posted here, but it is rather long... hehehe... so I am holding off on posting it here in its entirity, though I suppose it wouldnt hurt. the more I think of it, it could be its own sticky post put in the modules subforum.

I knew the wiki had a message up saying not to post anything just yet, so I'd held off on updating it.

I wouldn't mind a stickied thread here for a series of such guides. Other people won't be able to directly edit them here, though I do check for PMs every so often.

It seems to be alright with you, so I'll post up a new thread in the Modules subforum where the document is readable without having to download it.

I'm talking about the new dev wiki, not the current wiki.

Oh. Well then...

I've set up a thread in the Modules section where I'll do the actual posting for the documents themselves, as I get some progress on them done. I've made a few skeleton posts that details out my current plans for the document series. I don't know how long it'll take me to fill all of those in, but I think my current pace is going to slow down dramatically, as I've only gotten about this far on my own personal module, so I'm starting to enter lesser known territory.

EDIT: Finished part 2 as best I could get it done for now. It's a lot rougher than part 1 was, and there's more things I'm not certain of.

EDIT 2: Part 3 is now mostly completed and posted. I've left out the full writeups for item egos and artifacts for now, but they'll be in shortly.
