I was wondering if there was anything to my idea of using the turn gain whenever you get a regeneration effect from the fungus tree combined with lots of regeneration effects/heals, especially those that are instant cast, to be able to kill enemies in effectively 0 game turns and therefore not need any defence?

Which instant-cast effects do you think will get you extra energy? I suspect you'll want to check the code or test in-game before depending on them working. I know that healing infusion doesn't, for example.
The most abusable-looking effects that I noticed in the code when it comes to Ancestral Life are: Bathe in the Light (requires it to heal for 100+), Judgement (requires 100+ damage), the mindstar attack+heal, and Swallow.
