Melee summoner died because of a summoning wyrm in the spider cave. Teleporting away did not save him (tp'd into a bunch of spiders).
I made this character to test the melee tree of summoning.
I also changed the code a bit to tweak the war hound.

Did all the usual stuff and went East. After maxing all melee (except the jelly) I tried to see what max spider is like.

What really killed me is the lack of aoe attacks in melee. Summoners have only two summons that can do aoe, both are in the ranged tree, and one is purely fire >_>.

Do the warpers have a high enough level of manathrust to have it beam?

It means that the manatrust level will be the same as the raw talent level (not modified by mastery). If I am not mistaking then at 3/5 warper its manathrust becomes a beam. From my own experience I can confirm that at 5/5 it is a beam.

Warpers have the bad habit of putting time prison on enemies. The AI keeps attacking that target even tho it does not get any damage.
Also, time prison is used randomly so you might or might not get the right target out of combat for a few turns.
If all you want is damage then don't use warpers.
Manathrust has a cooldown.
If you want aoe damage, then the hydra is the way to go (putting skill points to 5/5 really helps, about ~270 dmg per aoe).
