No Potion & Scroll Challenge

#1 Post by madmonk »

As a result of this topic in Ideas I am opening a new challenge...

You may not use any Potions or Scrolls unless it is necessary for Plotline purposes...

So play with Normal difficulty. Free choice of Race and Class.

This could be very nasty or it might be as easy as anything. Like to see how you feel!
Regards

Jon.

I think there should be the caveat of no archmages allowed ;)

Agreed! No Archmages...

For the obvious reason they are a walking potion/scroll machine!

Wow! My level 8 Berserker just died. I am so happy! :D

Seriously, I am very happy! I have never had a level 8 berserker before so for me this is mega!.

What? Oh, yes, I ran out of hitpoints!
Regards

Jon.

Any idea how you can survive without healing or regenerating mana? An archer could work, maybe...

try one of the classes races that has a healing ability (like dunadan, divine classes, non-archmage mages (those were never declared invalid :P)), cursed, etc

Which non-archmage mages have a heal ability? I haven't played that much but when I was fooling around with the fire and ice mages, they didn't seem to have that school.

They do not :)
Alchemists can use life leeching gems, but that's probably not enough

I'd be DAMNED impressed if anyone can win this game without ever using a healing potion. I truly don't think the game is balanced in such a way to make that possible. Enemies just do WAY too much damage to you, and there aren't nearly enough healing talents to compensate.

It does look like that to me too!

On the other hand it is quite fun trying. I have been trying all sorts of things.

The highest I got was a Level 9 Ghoul Berserker - so masses of hit points.

That simply removes the purpose of the challenge.

Powerwyrm - no. No it doesn't. First of all, the classess healing (and even most class-skill healing) is strictly limited - in stark contrast to walking into the final fight with a backpack full of 10 full heals. Second, solving the healing issue (which, as I've just noted, this doesn't do) doesn't replace magic mapping, identify, phase door/teleport, detect creatures, potions of free action, cure poison/disease, or the Blood of Life. Given that you can't use slime mold potions, there *aren't* any classless ways of teleporting, and given that you can't use archmages or mana potions, the only classless ways of detection are rather starkly limited in use. (Best bet there would be alchemist or one of the two hybrid mages and rescuing a seer a few times, but even that is somewhat limited - and it's hardly classless.)

well, the mage classes can use PD to out of sight and then teleport to angolwen, so there is no reason for them to need healing (except for maybe bosses)
