A chest spawned directly underneath the center of the farportal. When I opened it, the 9 tiles behind the farportal changed to a giant chest.
The portal itself works normally.

Clearly farportals hold some sort of extradimensial component, distorting and altering the world around them. Be glad it didn't distort your weapon into something far too warped for you to use.
