The game hung when I tried to enter the Old Forest, after coming back from the east. When I rebooted and tried to load my character, the world map is completely black and I can't do anything.

... I got this too, but in the opposite direction. Game hung trying to load the world map after recalling from the bottom of the halfling ruins, killed the process, restarted and I'm in black screen world too. I tried to dig into it a little in this thread, tried deleting level/zone files, but no joy. Based on my limited understanding, it looks like I've got the map from the wilderness and the placement from the bottom of the halfling ruins. 
Hope you get some more useful responses, I'd like to save my char also.
