[b12b] Channel staff with Staff of Absorption

Using an Archmage with 'Channel Staff' learned from a rescued alchemist. After beating The Master dude I tried using his funky staff, but when using the channel staff skill on a ghul I got a sudden huge slowdown in the game time system. Also the channel object itself simply hung over the ghul, not hitting it (the swirly graphical effect hovered over it, and the ghul was not damaged). After killing the ghul with a conventional spell I found the game get slower and slower, not accepting movement commands unless done one square at a time. The channel staff effect still hung around on the square where it was cast (well, whilst I was in view at least).

I managed to get off the level and the speed returned to normal. However.... wanting to explore the bug further I returned. Curse my curiosity! After taking one step off the stairs the game has pretty much locked up. I can interact somewhat with the interface - menus and tooltips pop up and the right-click works mostly okay. However I'm utterly unable to move, or to activate any talents, by keyboard or by mouse. Right-click reveals no available talents, just the move option (which results in nothing happening). Sustained talents cannot be deactivated. Trying to rest results in the "Resting..." box popping up but doesn't advance time (I have to cancel it) - repeatedly doing this to get the "Rested for 1 turns" message does not result in time progressing, as can be seen by my depleted mana level. Using inventory items *does* work. I tried saving and reloading to no avail.

Uh, help? :( This is my bestest character ever and I don't want to lose it to a bug right after beating The Master!

AAAAAAAAGGGHHHH!!!!

I decided I might try reading phase door scrolls to get out of the level. Well, I ended up near a skeleton warrior, who I found could move - indeed, without me taking any actions! He was soon hitting me down to low health. I drank a potion but he kept on hitting me for more damage than I could recover in the time it took to get the menu up again. I opened the character information screen thinking it would pause the game, but he kept hitting me with the char screen open! I decided to save and exit before I died, only to find the skellie still hitting me whilst I that menu loaded. Before I could click on "Save and Exit" he took he down to minus health.

And so ends my first Archmage, fresh from defeating The Master, beaten to death by a skeleton that defied time :(


*ahem* Or so he would have ended if I didn't kill TOME4 in Task Manager straight away. I have no intention of losing a promising character to a game bug! I'm now back next to the stairs with seemingly no way of escape. I tried using a controlled scroll of phase door to land on the stairs, but it took me a few squares away instead. I'm guessing the whole of time has been broken by channelling the staff of absorption, and I'd rather like to get it mended. Any ideas?

Little update - I managed to savescum my way to the stairs with phase door scrolls. No easy effort, I might add... But on trying to use the stairs, with either mouse or keyboard, I get the message "There is no way out of this level here." Infuriating!

Hmm, what should happen if you try to channel mana through the staff of absorption?

I suggest it drains all your mana, possibly doing extra damage as well..
(or it drains all your mana and doesn't shoot anything)

It shouldn't crash the game :/ I wonder if it has anything to do with the damage type being "physical" rather than a regular element? Or possibly it's completely unrelated (though the issues did seem to start up when I tried using the skill and the channel object hung over the target instead of striking it).

Fixed! I suggest you do not go down to level 9 ;) (and do not channel that staff again)

I have send it to you by mail.

And it is big because everything is dynamically modifiable, so everything needs to be saved

Hurrah! Thanks a lot, DarkGod. It's working nicely, though I'm still tempted to return to the previous level to check out that vault :(

Also, minor aside, I fecking love the start of the Tol Falas tune.


Edit: ARGH! I accidentally returned to the previous level! Fecking stairs were right next to each other... Uh, but thankfully it let me immediately ascend with only a few second torturous delay...
