I've had the same thing happen to me. After I died, I tried to close the game but got the "saving game" screen instead, which of course didn't finish because there was no game going on anymore. After cancelling I was dumped back into the game with the "dump character/return to main menu" window gone, so I couldn't exit the game at all and had to manually kill it from the task manager.

I'm guessing when it gives a player a turn, the pause for user input is what is preventing the time from passing, with your death time would just pass. Unfortunately this would peg CPUs.
