First of all, awesome game. In fact, were it a lesser game, I wouldn't have bothered to come here and register and everything just to post about it, but seriously: bugfix your stuff, or something, man.
Resolution
I play on an E-PC, so I often switch video output to a 21" monitor at home, or the native 1024x600 display when I'm on the road. However, if I shut the game down at the 21" monitor resolution (1440x900) and then try to start it again after switching to the E-PC's native resolution, it just refuses to start at all, and there's jack squat I can do about it short of going back home, switching to the 21" monitor, starting the game, switching back to native resolution and then shutting the game down again (if I ever hope to start it again at native resolution).
Just a quick glance over the "bugs" topics shows a lot of resolution issues. You might want to, you know, "get on that".

I wasn't sure why this was, so I decided to duck into a nearby dungeon ("Old Forest") to see if it was just the encounter, or the game messing up in general. To my surprise, rather than entering "Old Forest" successfully, the game crashed my computer to the BSOD, twice.

I'm not really qualified to criticize, because I can't program my way out of a wet paper bag, but still, you're putting this thing out there for people to play. I only expect BSOD's from malware and viruses (and maybe one or two of Bethesda's most recent PC conversions). Anyway, you've done an awesome job so far, and it's a real shame. I was really looking forward to playing the game, exploring the different classes, and messing around with some of the unlockable options/classes/campaigns and whatnot, but BSODs? I'm not going to risk an entire system re-install for this (or any) game. Really, fix some of this stuff.

At the end of the day the short answer to your question is "Yes, you should!" it's the only we way we can keep the forum clear of spam, dodgy links, and other such stuff.

I do understand where you are coming from. At the time there was a lot of debate around this amongst the moderators but we were completely deluged in spam and spam posts to the tune of several hundred a day! It meant immense amounts of work for the moderators to clear out the junk. We looked long and hard at a number of solutions but felt that this was the best way forward!Nit-picking

Yeah, I was just "nit-picking", it's not a huge deal. I can understand how spam problems have gotten kind of out of hand on several different forums (I've seen some forums rendered wholly useless because of it), and I appreciate you taking the time out to explain that point. Nonetheless, spam protection doesn't seem to necessitate a confirmation question that cannot be "figured out" (e.g. What mythical figure lives at the north pole and gives out presents once a year), rather than being something the average person who is not knowledgeable about the game has to search for.
If moderators were taking it an extra step, by figuring the average human spammer couldn't be bothered to download the game, and then root around for the pertinent information that would answer the question, then I can understand that as well, but have to point out that when confronted with this problem myself, all I had to do was google it (annoying as that was).
At any rate, just being fussy about that. I would also like to point out that I'm not thrilled to make my debut here by whining and complaining to the developer(s), but I would point out again that bad games don't bother me, I could care less about bad games. It's those games "that are so close to being really awesome if only they would..." that really get me going, so in a very convoluted way, the dev(s) might take it as a kind of compliment that flaws in the game are able to inspire such levels of ire. Complaints about BSoD have been very rare, so it would be much appreciated if you are willing to try things out and help us determine what's going on.
(1) Upgrade to the latest drivers for your gfx card. Seriously, double-check this.
(2) Disable framebuffers (FBOs). This is in the video options.
(3) Try this t-engine executable and SDL.dll (replace the ones that came prebuilt with b38): http://tomenotes.wikispaces.com/file/detail/te4.rar
(4) You can manually change the resolution modifying this file: "CRAZY_WINDOWS_SOMEDIR\T-Engine\4.0\settings\resolution.cfg", where CRAZY_WINDOWS_SOMEDIR is your home dir or settings or documents or something.
That's all for now; hope these help. Please keep in mind that this game is primarily developed by one person, and that he has released 38 betas at the rate of nearly two significant betas per month, which is incredible. I also know he wants to release a non-beta version sooner rather than later, so clearing out rare but devastating bugs would be a very good idea. Please let us know what you find out. Cheers!

I concur with tiger_eye, if you can work with us to figure this out we would appreciate it. It is incredibly difficult to debug problems that we cannot reproduce, and most of the devs work on Linux, so as the saying goes: "Help us to help you!"

I think for some of these things an FAQ with the game might be helpful. "Update your graphics drivers" and "Disable FBOs" are both common solutions to problems many have, and giving this information in a FAQ.txt file with the game may help alleviate some frustrations people experience. The answer to the forum registration could also go in such a file.

With all due respect, I equate this to going to the doctor with a broken leg and having him/her tell me to up my vitamin C intake. I've had graphical compatibility issues of all types in the past, I've had everything from low/choppy FPS, artefacts, entire textures not rendering to game freezes/crashes to loss display (forcing me to shut down PC because I couldn't see anything), to system-wide crashes that would lock/freeze-up my PC. Not to mention that I've been playing the game for days, every screen/effect, display etc. has displayed just fine, so you're telling me that a slightly different tile or something in "Old Forest" is causing the game to crash my computer and give me BSOD. Hmmm.
Done. I also turned off other graphical options that might have been stressing the system although--again, the game has been running just fine with no graphical issues whatsoever up to this point. No effect, entered "Old Forest" stage/instance loaded, as screen was expanding game crashed PC to BSOD. The upshot is that basic OS functions like explorer.exe have mysteriously stopped working, probably as the result of me basically having to hard-boot the PC at random every few minutes or so.Disable framebuffers (FBOs). Done. The splash screen now takes eons to load. I started the game when I started writing this post, it is currently at 42% ooops, 44%. I'm glad to have that information, thanks. Regardless, there should be an exception to handle instances when the game starts and finds a different resolution than when it last shut down. The game is clearly aware when resolution changes (hence the "accept this resolution?" messages), it should be no difficult task to make it query the user about new resolutions when it starts, instead of simply hanging for eternity. In fact, it is probably failure to handle some similar unforeseen exception that is giving me BSODs.You can manually change the resolution modifying this file...

I really do appreciate the significance of that. I've tried my hand at programming/game programming myself and failed utterly, but not before I realized just how complex it really is. Also, looking through some of the code corrections offered by participants on this forum, I've seen how tiny things like calling the wrong variable, using an incorrect multiplier, or mixing variables in the code have cause undesired results.
Designing a game essentially on one's lonesome is a herculean task, and Darkgod has my sincere respect for basically doing this. However, and I know saying so is especially unwelcome coming from some ingrate nobody who's been playing the game for less than a week, been on the forums for less than two days, and knows zilch about game programming but--he might want to consider taking on some permanent development help. If the game ever does get a non-beta release, then gamers just like me will end up being about 90% of people playing, and while I hold my fellow man in some esteem, my guess is the 5% or so who also end up getting BSODs are going to react with slightly less patience than I have.
I would like to continue to trouble shoot, but I'm seriously getting worried about my overall system stability. If there's a major update to the game (and new package/version) made available, I might check back and check it out. Keep fighting the good fight.

I wonder if it's the weather effects in Old Forest? Seems very strange that this would happen. I ain't seen a BSOD in years... What's your graphics card and other system details? May be useful to know for debugging.

If you can't get the other t-engine.exe and SDL.dll to work (and I don't know why they wouldn't), then you can either use the originals again, or you could try posting the log file here. Slow loading like you described is a symptom of a lua error upon loading. There should be an error report in the log file, and it would be helpful to know what it is (although you may need to make windows flush data to see the error, which I don't know how to do).
If you continue to have problems once you have a working executable again, I would urge you to do a thorough memtest check (at least 6+ hours, unless you find memory errors sooner). It may also be useful to watch your memory usage as you play the game. This isn't a broken leg; it is debugging, and it is anything but straightforward.
I would also urge you to stay on topic and try to be productive and helpful. For instance, we still don't know any details about your system or its specs (it's an E-PC, and you sometimes connect it to an external monitor). Please share. If you continue to bitch and moan about how shitty this game as been developed, then I won't try to help anymore. That was my one off-topic remark, and I urge you to take the high road and not comment on it and please don't feel like you need to write to defend yourself anymore than you already have. Good luck!

While doing a stand disk check after a BSOD, it mentioned some bad memory sectors in one of my Firefox folders or something. I'm not sure I've ever defragged or anything on this PC since I've had it (years now). So there's that too.
Anyway, have at it. I openly admit that my attitude since the very first post has left a lot to be desired. I'm salty because this awesome game is unplayable for me now, and soon I will have spent more time debugging/reinstalling/disk-checking than all of the hours I spent playing the game (up until it started crashing my PC) combined.
I will follow up with a log file I found in the game folder in the following post. Sorry in advance for the length.

A mem test checks your RAM for corruption, scan disk looks for bad sectors on your hard drive. Kinda similar in some ways but the later is like having a bad memory and the former like having a bad heart.

I am going to brainstorm a bit with the other devs for things to test. One things that occurs to me is that the recent versions of ToME are using a developmental branch of SDL, so would you mind testing an earlier beta? I believe b32 is the first one to use SDL-1.3, so can you download b31 and check the Old Forest with it? Here is a download link. Cheers!

No need to apologize, you did the right thing there. In the future, try wrapping long things like this in the code formatting blocks so it is easy to see what is copy/pasted and what is you explaining about it.I found this in the folder where I keep the game, this is from a .txt file entitled "te4_log.txt" (sorry for the length, I don't know what might be pertinent and what might not be)
It makes sense once you know what is going on. The output by default is buffered, which means the program collects X characters in memory before opening the file and writing to it. File I/O is slow relative to memory I/O, so this behavior usually just improves performance. When you are experiencing problems, be it simple application crashes or BSODs, this means that some of the log is never written to the file. There is a command-line option "--flush-stdout" that turns off the buffering behavior, but I believe that it works imperfectly on the Windows platforms. It is possible there are some hints in there, though, so let me outline the steps I believe will get that option enabled.Seems odd how it just...cuts off there.
- Make a shortcut to the T-Engine.exe process
- Right-click on the shortcut and bring up Properties
- Find the field that has the executable in it
- Add "--flush-stdout" to the end, so it reads: "bla/bla/bla/t-engine.exe --flush-stdout" (no quotes)
- Use the shortcut to run the program
I agree, the 128MB is probably referring to the amount of RAM that the graphics card reserves. T-Engine is not your typical roguelike, though, and does use a lot of fancy graphics features that are usually reserved for games you would consider "gfx intensive" (Skyrim, etc). Everything is run in OpenGL, and even the ASCII graphics mode is actually character images drawn on the screen rather than a Curses-like interface. It is for this reason that people suggested updating your graphics drivers, since some drivers when receiving these specialized commands balk and cause issues. FBOs are one of those fancy graphics features that can cause issues, but it doesn't sound like that was the problem for you.This can't be right, I certainly don't have 128MB of graphics acceleration on this PC, it performs at maybe the level of a 16-32 bit card, and is on-board, resulting in heavy RAM loss if I run gfx intensive games (roguelikes not included).
My guess is that the programs that are utilizing these fancy graphics features are also the ones that have put time into compatibility. For example, a lot of games nowadays run a auto-configuration to figure out what sorts of capabilities you have and then turn things on/off on the backend. T-Engine does not have that yet, but if BSODs become common (you are the first reported one I believe) then we will definitely have to go that route.I've had graphical compatibility issues of all types in the past, I've had everything from low/choppy FPS, artefacts, entire textures not rendering to game freezes/crashes to loss display (forcing me to shut down PC because I couldn't see anything), to system-wide crashes that would lock/freeze-up my PC. Never have I had BSOD.

edge2054--gotcha, I misunderstood there, I'll download the memtest program and leave the PC to run it on some night.[EDIT] links on the memtest page download to 96% and just stop, perhaps there's another place I can get the program, or a similar program? Then again, it might be my connection, I'll try again later[/EDIT]
yufra--I added the line command to the .exe in the "general" tab of the shortcut I created. The log file seems to be running pretty much in step with the program, I read the log and it showed me shooting a rat, or what have you.

I understand, I used to play Gearhead on this PC as well, I understand how OpenGL can quickly drain system resources (I actually can't get that game to run on this PC as a result of incredible laginess, but no crashes)T-Engine is not your typical roguelike, though, and does use a lot of fancy graphics features that are usually reserved for games you would consider "gfx intensive" (Skyrim, etc).
