This might be a bit odd, but what about an artifact that can form a two-item set with one of MULTIPLE other artifacts, resulting in different bonuses? Say the artifact 'draws out' hidden powers from the other.
Can't think of good examples right now, but I hope you get what I mean.

You are describing mindstars now. Would be good to have more of it, though.

I know about mindstars, but I meant an 'automatic' set(think mindstars require using, no?) and on non-mindstar artifacts obviously.

The reason the mindstars aren't automatic is because ToME doesn't support multiple separate sets on one item, to my knowledge.

Dog Whistle
Item category: tool
Power Source: Nature
I'm unsure of what stat bonuses would be appropriate, but it should have some.
Activate: Summon Wolf (as talent level 1.0, excludes summoner's cap). However, plays the barking dog audio from Derth the whole time the creature is active (possibly at a slightly higher volume).

Different set things would be golden. The more the merrier like they say.
What about something as simple as X amount of equipped ego descriptors? Different ego descriptors often don't appear on different item types, for example staves have magewarrior ego but hats don't.
What about making it so that magewarrior goes with sorceror hat and scholar boots for example making a magical set to give just a little bonus.
On top of everything else players would have to experiment and find out different combos. Maybe even so that player would have to find the relevant info in-game to activate the set bonus.
Finding the bones of great paladin champion would activate a set combo of following egos: sharp, scholar and sentry.

I think this would be a really cool idea if there were bonuses for partial set completion as well as a larger bonus for the whole set. These could be a nightmare to balance, though.

How about a Summoning Necro set:
1. Gloves +10% casting rate, +20 mana… with set: +.2 necrotic minions, +5% darkness damage, +15% darkness resist.
2. Helm +10% summoned creature damage, +10% darkness resistance cap, +20 mana… with set +.2 to advanced necrotic minions, +50% blind resistance, +5% resist all.
3. Boots: +10% movement, +10% darkness resist, +20 mana… with set: +10% global speed, +.2 necrotic minions.
4. Amulet: +5% resist all, +10 mental saves, +20 mana… with set: +.2 animus, +5% resist all.
5. Short staff: +10 magic, +20 spell power, +15% darkness damage, +20 mana… with set: +.2 necrotic minions and advanced necrotic minions, +.2 undead explosion, +15% darkness damage.
Those bonuses are just a guess… I'm not very good at this but my idea was bump up general resistances, darkness resistance and heavily pump up summoning strength.

Of The Whiner -ego, usable for projectiles. It would make all the corresponding ego pouches/quivers have infinite ammo.

Eh, I'm bored,so why not?
Weathered Cross
Crafted by Arcane Forces
Sun Paladin only(Possibly would drop from one of their first bosses in the East?)
T1 Trinket, image would be a cross, or maybe prayer beads.
+5% Light damage(Want to say 10%, but might be too high)
+10% Light Affinity
+10% Darkness Resistance
+1 Light Radius
Activate to use Healing Light or Barrier at a random level. Uses X power out of X, and is usable only at below X% health.
"Although worn and broken, the soul of someone truly devout never dims."
Admittedly I'm not entirely sure how item power works, but I figure it'd have a long recharge time.

Just something that would add +Wil and +Cun on random Mindstars. Currently there's only one ego that gives some of each stat. Only mindstars with proper Wil and Cun are yellows.
