Fighter "winner"

#1 Post by greycat »

Well, the game says I've won (for now). So, the balancing in beta5 is really changed, because I couldn't do anywhere near this well in the other versions. I think the biggest change overall is the fact that I'm so much higher level all the time. In beta1-4 I was typically struggling to survive the icy place or the undead place at level 13, and getting my ass handed to me every time. In beta5 I was level 13 by the time I killed Old Man Willow.

Early on I had a great deal of contention for those precious Skill points, but not so much for the Talent points. On a few occasions I just stockpiled the Talent points until something worthwhile opened up. Later, I started dumping them into the few available Talents just because there was no reason not to.

I didn't use Shield Wall until I had about 3 points in it, somewhere around level 10 or 12 or so. After that, I had it on full time. It's awesomely powerful once you've got a few points in Weapon Combat to allow you to overcome the to-hit penalty.

I had to take the Burrow talent in order to get out of the Sandhole. The up-stairs on the final level were disconnected from the room.

I was level 20 or so when I hit the southern undead tower. Level 27 or so when I hit Moria.

I found the galvorn longsword early in the game (either Trollshaws or Old Forest). Couldn't use it until level 11. Never found a better longsword.

Good ! well done!

Is it too easy now?
How were the early levels ? no more insta death at the hand of nasty skeletons ?

You might want to slow down level advancement a bit. Not as slow as beta4 was, though.

I generally don't go anywhere that can generate skeletons in the early levels. I went back to Amon Sul after the Sandhole, I think. Or maybe it was after killing the Minotaur. Not that I ever really made use of the reward (indirect -- the ring shop in the mage place). I think I only went to that town twice. I did it mostly for completionism.

By the way, I died while fighting my way back out of the first orc camp full of undead. Unlocked paladins and skeletons, as well as about a half dozen achievements.

Nice :)

Balance in the next few beta will be shaky as I'll try to find the good "balance" :)

Gotta love Fighters. An Elf Fighter was my first winner and I plan to go through the game again at some point with a Skeleton Fighter who specializes in daggers (pure dex/riposte monkey).

Dagger/Shield.

Figure daggers get bonuses to damage from Dex which lets you basically just pump dex for hit, damage, and defense (which means more ripostes).

Being a skeleton keeps your strength from bombing out so you can still meet your talent requirements.

You didn't ask me about balance either, but I just tried the bandit lair and boy is it harder. Did the bandits summon before? If so I never noticed because I killed them so fast. This time that summoning was a BIG deal. Now with stealth changed I had a hell of a time with a level 6 archer and ran though 8 light healing potions, one full healing potion and one phase door scroll before dying to the first level of the bandit lair.

Yeah, but either way the damage for a dagger comes out the same right?

I mean if I put 2 points in Dex or 1 point in Str and 1 point in Dex or 2 points in Str the damage for my dagger should all be the same.

If I dump it all into Dex (aside from talent prereqs) then at least I get the hit and defense bonuses too.

The bandit lair is much harder, yes, although I think it just means that the rogue classes are finally working properly. I don't see any big problem with the levelling either. And I like fighters, so please don't nerf them? Pretty please? Just please fix the savefile problem (OK, and the shopkeeper bug too, if you REALLY have to... ).

neh, I guess it is a 50:50 split, and it doesnt need to be spoilered, I was just busy so I didnt bother editing my post. however the total damage for knives is 45% for both str and dex, which is still less than the bonus for str on a longsword.
