What's this about? I carry around a junkart of genocide to deal with hounds and breeders which have gotten out of hand. Tried it on Greater Wall monsters, and lost took around 300 damage and died. Never noticed you take damage from that before.

Yep. genocide() and mass_genocide() take a boolean input. If it's FALSE then nothing happens to you, if it's TRUE than you take damage (IIRC depending on level) for every monster deleted. Needless to say you can only get FALSE in debug mode.

I think that the cost/monster is random and in the range of 1-3 hp. Presumably the GWMs had bred so that there were >100 in the vicinity.

Genocide and especially Mass Genocide can be dangerous around breeders and large vaults. I like to play lost soul ironman sorcerors worshiping Melkor, and I have lost many sure winners to overly aggressive use of MG trying to clean out vaults.

Genocide is dangerous to use against monsters that occur in groups (like Zs) because it affects the whole level and there might be several groups that you can't see.
