I ran into an interesting/mildly alarming bug earlier today playing the Windows version of 2.3.5.
I was traveling on the overworld map when my lantern ran out of oil. Of course it kicked me down to the regular scale map. I had another light source (artifact boots) providing illumination, but the lantern had been cursed and so I could not unequip it. The program just saw my empty lantern in the light source slot and would not let me "<" up to the overworld. I waited until sunrise but it was still the same situation.
I couldn't find my way back to town, so I recalled back into the dungeon and fortunately it only took about 20 minutes of scumming the first level of Moria before I found a Staff of Remove Curse, at which point I was able to unequip the lantern, use my artifact boots for illumination and return to civilization.
It seems to me there are probably two issues involved:
1) An empty lamp should not prevent overworld travel during the daytime (it still could interrupt overworld travel to warn of low fuel).
2) The program should check for other sources of illumination (other than the Light Source slot) before denying overworld travel at night with an empty lamp.

Re: Weirdness with light sources in wilderness
I thought you could travel overworld with a completely empty lantern. I knew an almost empty one dumped you down. Apparently I was wrong.
It is weird that you can travel overworld with no light source at all but the game objects if you have empty lantern/torch.
