Can't see skills in skill bar (except when at max res)

So I just bought ToME today and all seems well, but whenever I'm on a resolution that's not the max, the skill bar at the bottom of the screen is just a gray bar. I personally don't have the greatest eye-sight so I like things to be larger so I would prefer to play on a lower resolution than max. However, when I lower the resolution (or keep the resolution and increase the scale) the skill bar just turns gray. When I use a skill I can see the border of the skill I used, but beyond that I can't see anything else about my skills. I'm on a macbook pro 13' late 2015. This game seems really fun, but I would rather be able to play it without having to strain my eyes. Any help?

That might be because the page on your bar is changing, try using pg up and pg down to scroll through your skill bar.
You can also try and unlock the UI (there's a square lock-like icon somewhere on the screen, this unlocks the UI) and then right click and drag your skill bar to resize it as you like.
