Is there any reason to use shields over heroic runes?

Since we can now see what our HP is at below zero, I don't see why I would take a shield ever since it doesn't give the stat bonuses that heroic runes do.

depends on class, some don't want to take damage to their HP like corruptor or possessor and some have lifesteal that benefit from a higher hp score, etc. heroism is generally better though

Don't forget that there are classes that get special benefits from shields, like sun paladin or arch mage. Also, damage done to a shield basically vanishes when the shield breaks. Damage done while you're under heroism still needs to be healed or you die.

So like many decisions in the game, one might be better for general purpose, but certain play styles will favor the more niche option.
