If I fail to clear a dungeon will the backup guardian spawn?

I'm playing through on normal, and just came back from the East. I started clearing the backup guardians, when I realized I'd never actually set foot in Kor'Pul. I cleared it out, did another dungeon, came back, and couldn't find a guardian.

So do the backups not spawn if you fail to clear the dungeon before going east?

Nope, generation is triggered by boss kill

I had a few of them just not spawn when I returned from the east. The Old Forest backup guardian was one, I scanned/dug out every inch of each level with the Burning Star artifact and tracking skill. One level did generate the danger message "You feel threatened upon enterting this place" or something like that. But the backup guardian was nowhere to be found, strangely.

Not sure if that was a bug or what.

I"ve never had that happen and I've done them dozens of times. Are you sure you had the right dungeon level?

Back from the east, old forest, explored every inch of every level, dug out the corners through the trees that I couldn't get to. Other characters I went back there with got jumped by the boss when they went through.
