Configurable option: Safe Key Movement

#1 Post by RaustBD »

Hey, I had this idea for a toggleable feature for ToME that might eliminate annoyance and pointless accidental deaths-by-interface.

Basically, ever since I unlocked Skeleton and started making Skeleton Arcane Blades, I've been utterly paranoid of using the arrow keys because of the skeleton warriors that randomly show up. What winds up happening is that I'm using the arrow keys to navigate, one of them attacks me from the side, I don't release the arrow key in time and the three or so times they can attack me while I pass them is enough for them to slaughter me. There's also the issue of getting bombarded multiple times in rapid succession because I'm holding the arrow keys.

The reason these things happen is because unlike auto-explore or click-to-move, arrow key movement doesn't have any situations in which it automatically stops, such as spotting an enemy, taking damage, etc. My idea is an option called "safe key movement", where when it's on, if you're navigating by arrow keys, or whatever you have it set to, and anything happens that would cause auto-explore, rest, or click-to-move to stop and give you back control, the game ceases to recognize the key as being held down and won't do anything until you release and press it again. This would largely help prevent these instances of death-by-interface unless the player is rapidly pressing the keys instead of holding them down.
