Slow game and loading (already tried lots of solutions)

#1 Post by frostnuggets »

Hey there, folks.

I've been searching for a solution for my problem for quite a while, but had no success at all.
The problem is: the game is running extremely slow. Actions take like 6 seconds to happen. Also, loading screens take a lot of time to complete. Getting to the "new character" one takes more than 10 minutes (and it stops responding, then responds again from time to time), and selecting "custom tiles" takes another handful of minutes. I have tried running the game from my steam account (inside steam, in my games library), from the steamapps folder (through the executable) and outside of steam (regular download from the website). I have tried running the game with and without steam overlay, "run as administrator", shaders (all of them) and fullscreen/windowed. I have also tried uninstalling/reinstalling the game, allowing game files in my antivirus and running using dedicated and integrated graphics (and changing they'r settings), with no success too.

What could I try next?
Thanks in advance for any help :>

EDIT: all my drivers are up to date, btw.
EDIT 2: I have also tried disabling all addons (I have only the default ones installed), and running without the expansion (using steam's menu)
EDIT 3: none of my components (hardware) is overheating, and I do not have performance issues, generally speaking.

Specs:
Intel i7 2670-qm
Nvidia geforce gtx670m
7200rpm hd
8gb DDR3 ram
windows 7 ultimade (64 bits)

These seem unlikely, but you have tried a load of other things:
Are you running the game with flush log enabled? That can slow it a bit.
Are the files horribly fragmented? Unlikely, but you never know.
Your video card should support the required OpenGL, but it might be worth ensuring the drivers do as well.
The only other thing I can think of is some sort of screw up with multiple cores. Also unlikely.

Thank you for your answer :>
1- Actually, I don't know. I will search/read about enabling/disabling the flush log and try it. Thanks for the idea :)
2- Nope. I defragmented my drive recently
3- I don't know about the drivers, but the video card itself does support it
4- Unlikely, indeed. I used to be able to run the game in this pc, btw. After I formated it, I couldn't play anymore, even tough I installed everything my pc needed (updated drivers, net framework, etc etc). Anyways, I tried setting the game's launch options to "-threads 8" and then "-threads 2", just in case, but it didn't work, too.

I'm thinkin about graphics drivers too. Can you play other games without troubles?
Also are you running the right processor architecture version? x64 in your case.
What about virus scanner/firewall? They could be actively scanning your game files when you play or impede with your online connection.

You could try setting all the OpenGL and whatnot setting to off on the Video Options / Graphics settings of the game. Remember to restart the game afterwards.
If that doesn't work then you could try disabling the chat functional.

This program should be able to test your drivers: http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/

Thanks for your advices. I shall attempt more stuff tomorrow.
About other games: I am able to run them fine.
About the processor architecture: what do you mean? XD Shouldn't steam download the appropriate game version automatically?

Thank you again for your time :)

Processor architecture as in 32bit with corresponding system, 64bit for that system (saw on your signature that this should be yours). Also there are ARM processor variants for laptops and stuff.
Anyways, that was kinda long shot and shouldn't be the issue. Just wanted to make sure every little bit is checked.

About Steam downloading the correct version, it might be. Ive never used Steam myself so i wouldnt know.

This really REALLY sounds like an OpenGL thing. That's how ToME renders all graphics, it doesn't have other otpions. many games can use this, or another rendering method, such as directx graphics. Finding a program that lets you change which you're using, and seeing if there's a performance difference (which would be huge) would prove this, but I can't think of anything specific offhand that has that option.

Hey there, I am back.

EDIT 3: I found out that the problem was based in unexpected conflicting software. I will try my best to solve it now.
I am really sorry about that. And thank you for all your support and ideas :>
Sorry for wasting your time.

EDIT: forget about 4.5 not being supported. It is 100% supported (and more versions appeared at the "Report" list, as can be seen in the new screenshot attached). Tough it remains true that all "Functions" from all versions appear as red ball symbols.
EDIT 2: my dedicated card's driver clean install didn't help

1- My video card supports up to openGL 4.5. I will attempt a clean installation of its driver in a matter of minutes
2- Yeahp, 64bit processor, and 64bit windows 7 ultimade
3- I tried disabling every graphic-enhancing game setting (and changed each video cards' settings too), restarting it and running once with each video card. None of them worked (and the integrated one did perform very bad)
4- I installed and ran the GLview software. It did show me some things under the "Report" section that might be relevant:
4.1- currently, my openGL version is 4.4, even tough I updated my video card about one day ago
4.2- [screenshot below] all the versions (except 4.5) seem to be supported (100%; green ball symbols), but all of theyr "Functions" shown (under versions 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.0 and 4.4) [I won't "expand" all of them so that everything can fit in a single screenshot] aren't supported (red ball symbols)
4.3- regarding version 4.5, only 90% is supported. The only missing feature/requisite is "Shading language version: 4.5"
5- my AV/FW is already set to allow stuff from ToME4, and it didn't seem to interfere with other games, btw

So, I will report back as soon as I finish the clean driver installation (a minor new release came up).
I really appreciate all your help and time so far :> I didn't expect so much attention hahaha

Sorry for double-posting, but I feel like it is an important warning to avoid making people lose their time.

Okay, but please leave info here about what the problem was actually caused by.

Hahaha ok, here it goes.

Through some trial-and-error attempts, I found out that the culprit was, in fact, my AV. After a bit more of testing, I concluded that it was, specifically, the real-time file-scanning component of my AV. Even though I marked the game as "safe" and allowed it through the firewall, the AV was still scanning its files, which makes perfect sense. The only thing I couldn't expect (and didn't thought about) was that the game worked in such way that my AV's real-time scanner would slow it down so much (never happened before).
But, after all, the solution was kind of... random, or something like that hahaha. While I was attempting to run the game after discovering the root of the problem, I happened to turn the real-time file-scanning component on and off some times. When I turned it off, everything worked fine. When I turned it on, it got all slow again. But, after some ons and offs, the game started running perfectly (just like it did before I formatted my pc) even with the component turned on. Like, wtf? Considering I don't have enough knowledge to understand how the game files and my AV behave/work (in terms of programming and etc), I can't point out why it all happened. I can only speculate that it has some relation with the cloud component and/or deep heuristic analysis (most likely this one).

Again, sorry for wasting your time. If you want me to, I could (as a self-punishment, lol) write a small guide to help people who can't run the game fine, containing the common issues/solutions that I have read about so far (idk if it would be of some use).

Not to toot my on horn but I kinda implied on my first post that you could try tampering with your antivirus. :D

Good thing you got it sorted out. More players will never hurt.
