Ensure at least one of each escort type

#1 Post by Effigy »

I bring this up because certain builds rely on unlocking a certain category from an escort reward (usually Celestial/Light, but others as well). Since you might not get all your escort spawns until Reknor, rerolling if you don't find the right escort is not a good option. It seems like an easy fix would be to make sure each type of escort spawns at least once. There are 8 escort types and 9 total escort spawns, so it works out.

The Succor addon lets you choose your own escort types, but this feels a bit like cheating since it's almost impossible to find the exact escort rewards you want through randomness alone.

Even if this was implemented there's still no guarantee you could save the escort you wanted to complete your build. In fact it may lower the odds if that one escort you needed either spawned in a bad spot or if you just lost it through bad tactical choices or luck as your chances of seeing a second one would be really low.

And you still might not know until Dreadfell rather your preferred escort was saveable.

Escorts are not really meant to be reliable, they represent a small benefit for your proper scouting skills; and sometimes, are just there to bring you tears or get you killed in the futile attempts to save them.
Indeed, anorithils are not rare, and ensuring one escort of each type would sometimes make matters worse, as the only anorithil you'd be getting (and you'd be getting only one) will spawn on Dreadfell. Next to Borfast.
All in all, this change will probably not make it. The reliance of builds on Celestial/Light is an issue in itself, and needs to be addressed by other means.

And it's not cheating to use addons ;) If you've really got your heart set on a specific build that you can only complete by getting certain escort rewards, use Succor.

It's a single player game. Darkgod's intent is for escorts to be a random factor, so that each character turns out a bit different and each game feels a bit different.

But he also put a lot of time and energy into making it so addons can be used easily so that people can play the game they want. There's no ToME thought police that are going to bust down your door if you tailor the game to how it's fun for you.

At least not yet, I hear thought police are slated for 1.5. So until then, just have fun :)

You both make a good point. I rescind my suggestion.

Even when thought police are implemented Worldly Knowledge gets you an escort tree, saves a category point, and gets a higher modifier. Not many builds absolutely need both prodigies.
