I used Mind Sear and Distortion 5/1/1/5 (eventually 5/5/1/5) for offense - throw down a Maelstrom and then rain Mind Sear beam and AOE attacks down until everything's dead. Towards the end of the game, Sollux was so overpowered that Mind Sear + Distortion Bolt frequently sufficed. For defense, I went Anti-Magic -Resolve and Antimagic Shield are great, and the first and third Fungal trees are nothing short of obscene - after I got those, 3/5/1/5 in Solipsism and a couple of good infusions, it took massive burst damage to even scratch me. The AM/Fungal combination is even better for solipsists in general and nuke solipsists in particular, since it ensures an unlimited resource pool at all times.
As soon as my offensive setup was complete, I went to Nightmares and maxed Inner Demons. Of note:
- Inner Demons is utterly devastating, as well as entertaining to watch. I killed the Master just by casting this, renewing it whenever it expired, and standing back and laughing.
- Fear-immune enemies and bosses automatically resist Inner Demons - unless they're asleep when you cast it, in which case it's guaranteed to work. And the majority of fear-immune enemies and bosses are not sleep-immune.
- Inner Demons has wonderful synergy with Distortion. Distortion spells don't harm allies, which include inner demons. So you can bombard a boss from range, take out any summons with AOEs in the process, stun it if possible, strip its physical sustains/effects, and deal plenty of DOT as well, all while it is too busy dealing with inner demons to defend itself or retaliate.
At this stage, the build was functionally complete. I stacked mindpower and mental save (hooray Yeek racials), and put the rest of my class points for the game into Dreamforge for excessive survivability. I rarely used the active skill, but I did enjoy passive damage + debuffs just from standing there, which Sollux did a lot while blasting things. It helped deal with any injured monsters that somehow made it to striking range.
At level 30, I took Mental Tyranny and proceeded to stack mind damage+ equipment to kingdom come. I later got Meteoric Crash as well. This wasn't an optimal choice - with over 50% critical, Tiger's Eye would have ensured a non-stop barrage of death - but I found Meteoric Crash invaluable in speeding up ordinary gameplay by virtually guaranteeing the death of whatever I first shot at during an encounter (and anyone around it). Plus it combined hilariously with Dream Forge's passive damage radius: periodically a sneaky monster would make it past my guard and go "ah-ha! Foolish adventurer, your life is mi- [meteor to the face]".
I was also ridiculously lucky to find a rare belt in Reknor that combined high mind damage+ with Telepathy/Orc. The latter feature meant I was no longer hampered by blindness in the second half of the game, which was the one status effect that kept sticking when used on me. It also made orc assassins useless, gave me huge advance warning of what I was about to face, and made hunting down pesky spellcasters easier.
I died four times, I think. There might have been a fifth early on that I can't remember. All were due to overconfidence and insufficient caution.
- Reknor: let myself get surrounded by melee orcs, without realising just how much damage they could do in one turn relative to how much I could regenerate.
- Room of Death x2. You'd think after stepping into the wyrms' line of sight once and getting one-shotted I'd learn my lesson. Instead I did it a second time. (I did clear it afterwards by luring them out of the door one by one and relying on Inner Demons while I stayed the heck out of the way)
- One of the final bosses. I still have no idea how he did it, since neither of them could scratch me for most of the fight. I was busy making a beeline for the third portal to shut it down when suddenly I was dead.
And then there was the ending. That ending. If you've ever won as a Yeek, you'll join me in laughing bitterly as I tell you how I spent much of the second half of the game stockpiling cool-looking artefacts in the fortress with aims of eventually bestowing them upon worthy characters via the Item Vault.
