Display more combat info (XP gain, calcs) in the in-game log

#1 Post by Gliktch »

As the title says. Maybe it's actually there and I'm just not finding it, but it would be nice to have options to change the verbosity level of the in-game logs. Most people probably like it how it is, but it would be nice to have the ability to toggle the following information for the other 5-10% of players who prefer more feedback about their kills:

- XP Gained
- Damage and Armor/Resist Calcs (net dealt/actual taken)
- Save throws and similar
- Milestones (each 100 kills, or each 10,000 cold/fire dmg for those pursuing such achievements)
- Other things that people might like to suggest in this thread :)

I'd really love to see values for heals and shields in the combat log. and if the information is intentionally withheld for non player actors I get it, but at least you should at least be able to see how much you healed yourself for afterwards.

Yes, that's a good one that I didn't remember when I was making the list. There's no need to hide enemy heal amounts since we can work it out by mousing over them before and after, and doing some arithmetic ;)

- Player Heal Amounts "gliktch regenerated 52.90hp" (and perhaps report total heal for that turn, including base regen, but no need to report base regen when no separate regen or heal is active that turn)
- Player Shield Damage amounts (e.g: "Skeleton Warrior hits Elkan for 0hp! (92dmg to Shield)")

I'd rather not see these things in the log, but instead in the fly-out text.
Sorry about all the parentheses (sometimes I like to clarify things).

True, it makes sense to show XP amount in fly-out text, instead of currently where I believe it shows killshot-damage amount. On my ToME (Windows XP, 32-bit) I already see fly-out damage for most hits, is it the same with yours?

And the idea is to at least include these things as options, rather than just changing and forcing everyone to have it the same way - I know there will be some people who don't want the numbers and things flying all over the place but want it in the log, and others who want the opposite, so if they are all made optional then everyone can be happy :D

Another thing I would like to see as an option is a wow style breakdown of damage Along the lines of Elkan hits Skeleton Archer for 200 Physical, 150 Arcane (350 total) (90 Absorbed, 200 damage, 60 overkill)

And yes options are always good. As always some will love it, and some will hate it, but having the choice is wonderful.

A feature I would really like to see as an option would be for the message log to be shaded slightly in a two tone fashion every other player turn, so if you have a bunch of persistant AOE effects hitting multiple actors you can see exactly how much damage you were doing each turn, and more precisely see what happened when. Take the existing message log background for example, and add a slight whitish grey backdrop to every other turns events and it would make it much easier to break down turn by turn events as they occur

I would prefer to have less information - there's too much available from just seeing the stupid npcs.

I'm not a fan of adding more spam to the combat log from a design point of view. I try to put information there that's more important then foo's regen heals for X (like devourers going into a frenzy and what not).

Granted, if it was an option that could be turned on and off, if you miss an important clue I left you in the combat log then it's your own fault for rolling with so much log spam and not pressing cntrl+m to check the log messages ;)

Sometimes you want the bare minimum of information, other times you want to scrutinize everything in the minutest detail, although when I'm asking for more combat log detail I should really be saying message log, It would be nice to have separate options for both, so you can have a terse minimal combat log, and a very detailed message log Having the message log being able to be toggled between Messages, combat and both would also be cool

Sooo.. We're all agreeing that options for changing the amount of information displayed on the battlefield, in the HUD messages (the ones that fade after a few seconds), and in the expanded in-game log (ctrl+m) are a good idea? ;) even if some people would use those options to decrease the amount of information instead of increase :)

The parts about separating combat messages from everything else, and about shade-striping per turn, both seem to be excellent points. :D
