Distinguish between permanent and diggable walls (ascii)

#1 Post by budswell »

Hi, not really important, more just a little annoying thing. I guess this is sort of related to the "mountains" vs "mountain chain" discussion going on in other threads.

I play in ascii mode 16x16. In the elven ruins (and probably elsewhere too) there is no way to tell the difference between a diggable or permanent walls. If I switch to shockbolt I can tell the difference but I think thats a bug - as there is no tile for the permanent walls so its a #.

So the idea:
Even if they have the same tile/char it would be good if they had a different tooltip when you look/mousover. Just like you had to look in Tome 2 to tell the difference between a "Granite Wall" and a "Permanent Wall". At the moment the tooltip just says "Wall" for both of them.

This has been done, but the difference is important enough that it should be visible straight away.

In ASCII mode it might be possible to free a character or background colour for this.
(I don't use it so I can't tell)

In Modern, designing different graphics would be too much work considering the many level themes and in-level tile variants for "wall".

A shift in colour or lighting would do.
Maybe only activated in dig mode, if you don't want to make dig-ways too obvious.

A shift in color or lighting is fairly easy to do - shaders would probably fit the best.
