Rescuetask impossible

#1 Post by Tom »

Hello.

Highly annoying and must be classified as a bug.
In Daikara I get a task saving the lonely alchemist.

Alas, between me and the alchemist in the starting corridor are 5 drakelings and one drake.
And ofcourse the drakes first move is to blast frost at the alchemist instead of me.

Tasks should not be impossible, but this one is.
At least it is very discouraging.

Once, some months ago, we were talking with DarkGod about the escort quests, and I said something like, "I'm only managing to save about 50% of my escortees." (I don't remember exactly what either of us said.) His reply was that 50% was a pretty good ratio. I interpreted that, at the time, to mean that from a game balance perspective, he expected the player to fail about half of these.

So, this is not a bug -- it's the way the game is designed. You're not supposed to be able to save all of the escortees, or to get all of the Brotherhood of Alchemy potions. They're optional bonuses, and if you get them, great! And if you don't get them, oh well.

Agreed. Also this is ultimately a side-product of procedural generation. Random content brings a huge amount of fun, with lots of interesting and unpredictable situations. But sometimes this can produce circumstances that seem outright unfair. If you try and restrict the randomness to make things fairer then you're going to sacrifice a bit on the variety of interesting scenarios that can pop up, and that makes the game less fun.

So, yeah, tricky situation, but some chars could technically win it, and we shouldn't remove the chance of such a thrilling attempt. On the flip side escorts give xp when killed by you, and there's even an achievement if you knock off a few yourself. Compete with the drakes to see who gets his scalp first!

I guess some char could win that fight over the escorts life around lvl 20, but we do talk 1/1000 now. Or worse.

E = Escort
D = Drake
d = drakeling
T = Tom, the rogue

EdDdddT

Two (or three) moves before he dies.
Technically I suppose it is possible to

Phase Door next to him
Swap Place
Kill the drakeling
Kill the Drake

before the Drake blasts a second time.
Or some char could perhaps Phase Door two times, one to land beside him and one to phase him away...

Still boring to have a whole bunch of enemies in between at start.
I really don't think that it is less fun to prevent set ups like that.

Ah, that sort of situation... Yeah, I agree that in that case the monster next to the player should simply be removed (unless it's a boss) and the escort placed beside the player instead.

An archmage could phase the escort away from a distance, but it's still unlikely the fellow would survive.

This on the other hand is shitty, but acceptable.
