Question on level "construction"

#1 Post by Hedrachi »

Are actors placed on a bare map before the walls are placed? Got a sun paladin escort in the Old Forest that got hung up on chasing down a poison ivy that was 2-3 tiles away from the exit, but because it was "up" from him, he did his trick of running endlessly into the trees until I eventually found the ivy and killed it, then it was back to business as usual. Old bug, but first time I spotted it in b28.

Actors are added after the map (including walls) are created. This sounds more like a vision bug, where the escort is seeing through the wall somehow.

Maybe related to this bug? When I was in the trapped! dungeon with my latest character, I noticed the pattern with which the slivers mentioned in that bug appeared: When the x-axis tiles of the map is lit up/discovered, a small sliver on the opposite edge appears, as though the map wrapped around and you could walk through the axis going whatever direction you were, and end up on the other side of the map. Same for y-axis tiles. So according to tile discovery/lighting, the maps all have the theoretical geometry of a torus, provided you dig a tunnel around the edges of the map. (It only discovered the tile slivers if the border tile was blank, but in always-lit areas like OF and Daikara, iirc the border slivers were always there but never lit (at least from the player perspective, they're probably lit when the player's at a level exit). Apologies if this is a little confusing, trying my best. Heh.

It actually looks more like this bug. Can you confirm if the ivy was on the opposite side of the screen? This may just be the FOV code wrapping around the map.

Yeah, that's the bug, FOV wrapped for some reason. But um, heh. The ivy is long dead, and Garkun is too. :/ Died in Grushnak... 6 or 7, to some stanking filthy smelly rancid little orc with Battle Call. Started the OF level on the west/left as normal, the east/right had a 9-10 tile long path along the last column of tiles which ended at the exit, the ivy was 2 tiles before it. So FOV could have easily wrapped and let the sun paladin "see" the ivy.
