The final hurdle

#1 Post by Lord Dimwit »

For a while now I've been wondering about possible ways to get a Warrior of some sort through the Void. ('Warrior' meaning a race/class who relies primarily upon hand-to-hand combat--not spells, missiles, or pets) Many people have stated that it's impossible or at least so difficult that it would be downright silly to try it, and I'm largely inclined to agree.

Still, I think it should at least be tried.

Here are some ideas I've had for the task. If anyone else has possibilities to contribute, please do so. :)

1) Zombie RohanKnight Swordmaster.
Pros: Lots of speed, lots of power, good HP, few restrictions.
Cons: Lousy stealth, atrocious saving throw, no way to deal with summoning/magic users, no reliable distance attack, no magic.
Odds: 50 to 1

2) Half-Ogre Haftedmaster (Worship Eru)
Pros: Good HP, can use divination/manathrust, can wield Grond in the Void.
Cons: Grond aggravates, bad stealth, Prayer is really expensive.
Odds: 40 to 1

3) Deathmold Possessor (Watcher in the Water)
Pros: Unparalleled attack power, good HP, great stealth
Cons: Can't seem to hit anything above level 100. Can't take the Watcher into the Void (there's a workaround for this, but it's ugly).
Odds: 25 to 1

4) Ent Loremaster possessing Ancalagon/Great Wyrm of Power
Pros: The wild card. Six Rings of Extra Attacks, Barehand Combat, a whole damn lot of HP, breath attacks, can summon Ancient Dragons.
Cons: Still lousy stealth, attack power is lacking, it won't be easy to get an Ent Loremaster to the point where he can kill GWoP.
Odds:25 to 1

5) Yeek Bard
Pros: It's a Yeek Bard!
Cons: Almost 100% chance of failure.
Odds: 8000 to 1

Those are my ideas. Anyone have comments?

6) Vampire RohanKnight Unbeliever
Pros: Immune to magic and summons, good HP, speed, and killing ability
Cons: Still terrible stealth, no ranged attack, no magic-devices, have to wield an unenchanted Dark Sword if you want to do it right.
Odds: 25 to 1

No ranged attack for Unbelievers? What about archery?

I'm not sure I have the patience to get a warrior type through to Sauron, let alone the Void, though. I've tried unbelievers, I've tried swordmasters, I'm trying now polearmmasters. I've favored magic device, I'm now favoring archery. I always get bored and take an unnecessary risk.

You'll still want a *master if you're going for antimagic, due to their superior weapon skills. And you'll have *no* chance with that (+0, +0) darksword.

I was thinking a Zombie Rohanknight Haftedmaster with antimagic -- you'll have Grond in the Void, and the aggravate won't be aggravating if the spirits can't summon on ya. I'm not sure how well antimagic would work when using Grond, though...

Hmm... chance of disruption would be 50%, with a radius of 11, at level 50 if you were wielding Grond.

Not too impressive... But Grond does have NO_MAGIC, which means perfect saving throw. It's an utterly deadly weapon in the hands of a high-level Haftedmaster, and the earthquakes would disrupt los enough to protect you from incoming nasties.

I am working on it with an Ent Loremaster. Currenly I am in a GWoP. I got there from finishing the save gondolin quest. I was in a AMHD body and did the gondolin quest. After that I was able to use Maeglin's body. After I equiped that I did the void gate quest. In the quest level I summoned High Dragons and got a friendly GWoP. I then hit it with a magic missle while it was surrounded by me and about 6 other Wyrms. After the fight the body was there, otherwise I would have rinsed and repeated.

I use a number of rings of slaying to increase my chance to hit. I also worship Tulkas and use Divine Aim against hard to hit/damage opponents. I like the array of powers that I have in a GWoP and may not give it up for Ancalagon. I will let you know if I finish. This char is experimental

Post it on the ladder if you get a chance. I'd like to see the character. The HP afforded by a GWoP or Ancalagon should be very useful in the Void.

I've been thinking a little more--if this character of yours falls through, I might try it with a Zombie Rohanknight Haftedmaster. I'll try to get Mimicry from FF and pump it up to the point where I can get extra arms--then I could use Grond with a shield as well as nice gloves and secondary weapon. Mimicry would also be nice for dealing with HIT:ABOMINATION.

What about a heavy duty archer with a shattered darksword? I think if you get a sufficiently cursed darksword you can get perfect antimagic without any skill. A good randart crossbow and sufficient supplies of exploding bolts should be able to do some damage.

Interesting idea, although it wouldn't qualify for Lord Dimwit's challenge.

I've tried that before, but I guess I suck at the archer class and Fumblefingers never gives me Antimagic, even with 98 quests.

If you do manage to get a good enough (or rather a bad enough, -60 -60 or so) Darksword you should have perfect Antimagic even at level 1, as Atarlost said.

Update: follow the progress of this utterly doomed character here:

Name should be Eorl, not Eol. Oh well, guess it doesn't matter.

This is going to be a tough one...
