Detection (and stealth), how does it work?

#1 Post by Caon »

Sometimes when I start a new game in the Trollmire all the monsters on the level just seem to keep following me even before spotting me. Other times I have to look for them and they don't attack me until I walk to their sight line. Any ideas why could this be?

Also when I hide and get into stealth mode after a monster has spotted me in normal mode, they just keep following me around until I get the message that they actually spotted me. Is this normal? Maybe because of the low level of my stealth it doesn't work properly?

I know I have answered this elsewhere in the forums, but a quick search doesn't show it so why not again. :D

Stealth does two things. First, if a NPC does not already know you are around (doesn't have a target) then it has a chance to not target you. If it does target you then you get a "spotted" message. Second, if a NPC is targeting you then stealth has a chance to obfuscate your actual position. It does this in a radius about your actual position, so on average NPCs will move towards you but at higher levels of stealth will rarely actually find you. Note that this obfuscation immediately disappears after dropping stealth, so if a NPC thinks you are over there and you step behind some cover and drop stealth, it will know exactly where you are. I have done a bit of campaigning to change this, so only time will tell how stealth evolves in ToME.

I am not sure what you are seeing when monsters start following you before you get a "spotted" message. It is possible they were already targeting you since NPCs "talk" to each other within LOS.
<DarkGod> lets say it's intended
