In 13, you could just hand over the guaranteed staff from the Shade to the apprentice and unlock Angolwen.
Now...it's more annoying. Yes, you can always scum or spend your precious gold to buy items but I don't feel that is too player-friendly.
So here's some possible ways to change this:
1)Reduce the number of items required somewhat, say from 15 to 12 or even 9. Simple, but a bit bland.
2)Reduce the number significantly - say to 5 or 6 - but require all of them to be egoes.
2a)Alternatively: use 1 or keep the current number simply have ego items count as 2 or 3 normal ones.
3)Any artifact jewelry or staff - world or randart, doesn't matter - automatically completes the quest.
4)Rather than counting # of items given, keep track of the total value in gold of the
items given, and when it reaches a certain threshold, the quest's done.
This is basically a more complex version of 2a, which sorta-indirectly includes 3(as arts are worth a lot).
