Show previously-seen items dimmed

#1 Post by greycat »

Crawl has an interface feature that shows previously-seen items "dimmed" (darkened symbols) when you no longer have direct line of sight to them. This would be very handy in the Trollshaws, where you're constantly gaining and losing line of sight to dozens of different tiles every time you move. If you happen to miss that potion that was only in line of sight for 2 steps, you'll have no way of knowing it was there. But if it showed up as a darkened potion after you move out of line of sight, you might see it a moment later.

Yes I pondered that one a lot.
I did not want to have them disappear because a monster picks it up but I suppose it's not worse than sandworms tunnelers making "visible" tunnels.
I'll change it

Re traps, it would be very nice for traps to show once a monster steps on them. If I see a monster get burnt, I'd rather the running command doesn't send me onto the same trap.

Yeah, if a trap gets sprung by any source while in the player's line of sight it should be visible from then on. It wouldn't have the problems that items have since monsters aren't going to remove them and they'll stay put between visits to the level.

Well, way I see this working is not, 'Show all items in explored but not visible squares dimmed' but rather a cache that knows what the tile looked like last it was visible, and only updates when its visible again. No need to store the actual tile and its contents, only reason you need that I think is if you want to mouse-over tooltip it which you shouldn't if its not visible.

Such a cache would be somewhat more lightweight and would also help with the sandworm tunnels. Just not sure how hard it is to implement.

In the same vein, I think it's kind of bizarre that traps you identify when you see them the first time (e.g. when/if you clear Amon Sul's top level then go to Bree) are not known when you return. Since the dungeon itself persists the known traps should too.
