malboro_urchin wrote:Overall, the class looks really cool. However, the Dream-forged Daggers tree doesn't feel dream-forged. Outside of the damage type, it's just dagger attacks and teleportation. Handy, and probably cool to play around with, no doubt, but it doesn't feel dream-forged.
Was browsing the damage types for something that feels swift and fleeting- came up with Dreamforge because quick wits (mind) and fire are both thought of as flighty and fast. If anyone has a better suggestion, I'm all for it. It's also worth noting that Dreamforge is a good damage type for the class since they will likely be aiming for +mind damage as much as possible.

The first two abilities in the Dreamforged dagger tree look fine, but the last two, I agree, don't fit the "Dreamforged" mentality. At least, as far as I can see.

Update

Dance of Death and Lucky Strikes have been changed. Hopefully they should feel a little more aesthetically fitting for their category.

Thanks again for the feedback guys!

I like the new Dance of Death, though I"m a bit foggy on how it works. Does it make a spectral thought-form of the weapon that occupies its own space and fights alongside you, or does the weapon only appear for one attack?

As of the way I have it now, it just performs one spectral attack. I thought about changing it to multiple turns hanging around you, but not sure about the balance of it. Perhaps it could deal something like ~15% of the weapon's normal damage, but hang around for multiple turns.

I think it'd be neat if the damage and duration scaled up with talent level. Maybe it could be similar to an afterimage?

I do wish the dreamforge dagger talents had a bit more dreamforge feel to the names and descriptions.

Update

Changed Force of Will, Sly Swip, and Evasive Spin to use a new mechanic- Flicker. Flicker leaves behind a dreamforged clone of your character that will explode if attacked by enemies, dealing a small amount of damage.

Also made a minor change to Dance of Death.

Hopefully Dreamforged Daggers feels much more coherent- eager to hear what you guys have to say about it.

IMHO, the new Dreamforged Daggers tree does feel a lot more coherent. If it were me, I'd have the clone either deal minor damage and a status effect upon explosion, or have it do a decent amount of damage.

I was thinking that probably the best part of the clone would be that it gives you a turn of breathing space most of the time- enemies attack it instead of you, which in and of itself is a fairly powerful mechanic. The Dreamforged Daggers tree is meant to be more about evasive combat and survivability than actually putting out big damage. It's hard to say without a playtest how it would all work, though… now to just get DarkGod to see this XD

Ah, that makes sense. I like the idea of using a mainhand dagger and mindstar in the offhand to take full advantage of some of the generics, like Force of Will & Flash.

FYI, this forum is rife with talented modders whom you could ask for help with balancing, putting specific numbers to the abilities that don't have them, and for writing up the class in lua. I'd be very excited to see this class as an addon!

I might have to look into that =D

I have some basic numbers somewhat laid out as far as cooldowns and costs go, but mainly hadn't included them because it would clutter up the OP so much. It'd certainly be badass to see this in-game, and if anyone has any suggestions for modders to ask I'm all ears. Given that I'm fairly new to this community, I don't really have much in the way of contacts

I know from experience with their mods that Doctornull and HousePet are both very talented (and prolific). I'd give them a shout.

Edit: shot them both a PM for ya!

In my experience, you can (literally) ask "How do I x", and within hours to days, someone will answer.

This is a fantastic community, in that respect especially.

I'll bite. How do I go about creating this class & its custom talent trees?

I have some experience in Lua, however due to time constraints I probably just wouldn't be able to do this justice myself. I work a day job in retail, tech support for The Indie Stone (makes of Project Zomboid) nights/weekends, and closed test for several other games. Suffice to say I'd love to do it but spending more hours buried in code probably isn't going to happen. I'd love to provide the creative force behind someone else doing it, though.
