Vaults have started to become the bane of my characters as well, though I am learning the various perimeter sizes means what to expect in terms of opposition and reward. I'm really starting to go towards the 'not usually worth it' side of things.

Though I must say pits of snakes, wolves and ants are just awesome for experience.

If it helps anything, that super-successful skeleton shadow blade died in a vault after failing to stun an armored skeleton warrior on the first blow.

I told you vaults are too hard to do and 95% not with it with most characters!

How would you tone them down ? reduce monster levels ?

No, up the reward that you get.

I find that that what you get as a reward from them do not reflect the difficulty.

object level is usualy increased in the same way as monster level.
I could up the ego chance though

Better stuff would really help. The danger's fine: we know it's there, but then you defeat it and get ... a scroll of not much. Sigh. So yeah, better stuff ;).

I agree, better stuff is probably the solution. Maybe only generate the next material level than what is commonly available in the current dungeon and up the level of potions. No lessers ever I think OR make all scrolls/potions found ego, seeing as how adding either of the current egos to scrolls or potions doesn't really effect functionality but does kind of effect 'keep it or sell it'.

What about making vaults persist provided you don't go in?

Then if you see a vault, you've got the option of ignoring it and coming back once you've gained a few levels.

Whereas now, if you leave and come back later, the vault will (I think) be empty and the inhabitants all gone..

Yeah I fixed that repton it was a bug not a feature :)

I'll force egoification on loot.
Maybe I could even add a chance for a guaranted artifact in some of the harder ones.

I've been dying A LOT on the one with the honey trees

It's hard to damage them because they are surrounded by the summons and you have to stay on their sight to do it. Then they start summoning behind me, cutting me off.
Mages probably do better but I've tryed with sun palas, archers and fighters all with the same result

But I've been getting them on low levels (6-8), an artifact is probably too much

To me archers have an easy time with the honey trees. The stuff you get should be ego-quality though just for the hassle.There is usually at least one stun trap in the entrance, make sure you know where it is for future reference. Then walk to the vault entrance but NOT inside. Use piercing arrow to knock down 2 of the honey trees, then keep firing until one of the big q's comes for you. Backtrack to the stun trap, then one more step. All the summons will get stunned so you can shoot them freely. As soon as the queue is wiped out, rest (to get your stamina back) then go back and repeat until they're all dead.

I beat a couple of honey glades last night with a fighter without too much trouble..
The honey trees won't summon if they can't see you. So, put your head round the corner, then retreat back past the entrance traps. The traps will help soften up the bears, and you can kill them -- retreat or phase away if necessary. Once you've done this, there should be nothing in the glade except the four trees. Charge in, kill one or two, and then retreat to clear the inhabitants. Repeat until done :-)

Objects are levelled-up, but there's not much difference between a scroll on level 10 and a scroll on level 30. Whereas if you find a weapon or a piece of armour that you cann use, and it's 10-20 levels better than the stuff you find outside the vault, then that can be a big difference.

Maybe a special reward type that is generated as the same type as whatever you're wielding when you enter the level? i.e. a fighter with a long sword would get a guaranteed higher-level long sword, a mage with a staff would get a guaranteed higher-level staff, etc.

The one with the honey trees is a pain without a beam or aoe. My most successful fighter to date decided to go up against one in the Old Forest on the boss level after beating him... ended up having to use a scroll of phase door because he'd gotten walled in by bees. Bees weren't doing any damage to him, but they were being summoned too quickly and moving too quickly to do anything else. I suppose I could have just taped a movement key down and came back after watching a movie or something but I just didn't see the point. Killed one of the trees but got blocked out on the way out, couldn't go anywhere but phase door out.
Having satellite internet is a lot like relying on the processes described in those RFC's for your internet. Except, instead of needing to worry about statues interrupting your connection, this time you worry about the weather. I have satellite internet. Fun, no?
