OK, here's the thing in context:

Code: Select all

~/t-engine4/game/modules/tome$ grep -r crucible .
./data/lore/.svn/text-base/old-forest.lua.svn-base:#{normal}#The Sher'Tul. Who were they? Where did they come from? Where did they go? The mysteries surrounding this crucible race are almost infinite. What little scraps of information we have regarding them allude to a mighty and world-spanning civilisation, wielding power and magic unthinkable. Now, however, all that remains of them are forgotten, wind-swept ruins, the tiniest minutiae of their technology sealed away in the studies of reclusive sages. Does their mystery not call to your curious nature as it does mine, gentle reader?]],

I haven't seen "crucible" used in this manner before, but it's obvious what it means -- that this race is the wellspring (or cooking pot if you insist) from which the rest came.

A more traditional word to use in place of it might be "seminal".

I'm quite sure I've seen the term used in this way before, probably in other fantasy writing. The undertones to it aren't as simply replaced by 'seminal' as it doesn't give the same feeling of an ancient race before all other races (which may not be true, but is certainly implied and likely believed by many in the world).

www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary wrote: 1: a vessel of a very refractory material (as porcelain) used for melting and calcining a substance that requires a high degree of heat
2: a severe test
3: a place or situation in which concentrated forces interact to cause or influence change or development <conditioned by having grown up within the crucible of Chinatown — Tom Wolfe>

Examples of CRUCIBLE

1. He's ready to face the crucible of the Olympics.
2. His character was formed in the crucible of war.
It really does appear to be the wrong word, not least because it's a noun rather than an adjective. The best replacements I can think of off hand (including thesaurus suggestions) are seminal, primordial or cardinal.

I always figured that it was something like "race by which the world as we know it was first forged". It makes sense, if we allow that the author might have been given to somewhat odd turns of phrase - which seems entirely in character given the way he writes in general.

Also, and separately, I'd like to note my serious disagreement with the idea of adding "-like" to the thing. It mangles the poetry of it.

Much worse. Why not just switch to 'ancient'?

Here's another one.

When speaking with the keeper of sher'tul fortress, he says "They had to. They forged terrible weapons of war. They won."

Your reply is. "But then were are they now if they won?"

were needs to be changed to where ;)

Manasurge rune short description (in shops) should say "for x turns" instead of "over x turns".

Description for Technique/Archery - base: Ability to shoot, you should never this this...

I'm not even sure what is it supposed to mean...
Why can't TOME 4 has a secret room where you can represent game bugs as, well, enemies you can crush like in Divine Divinity? That would be cool...

I think the Weirdling Beast has tentacle-like "appendages", not "appendices."

Eden's Guile does..

Code: Select all

game.logSeen(who, "%s speeds up!", who.name:capitalize())
So does the speed effect so you end up getting it in your log twice ;)

Grushnak's note has "decieved" instead of deceived in the text.
