Re: The Veins of the Earth
I'm having a problem similar(ish) to the one Sradac was having earlier; namely, I simply can't play the game at all, in my case because the "Play!" button that appears after inputting all character options is unclickable. I've had this problem across all four of the versions of VotE .team I downloaded, plus the 5.5 standalone (the standalone I even ran on two separate computers, one a Mac and one a PC). It's consistently the same issue and I can't figure out why.
Also, your link to 19.5 is broken, and going to the modules page on te4.org and trying to download 19.5 from there also results in a page not found error.

Re: The Veins of the Earth
Thanks for letting me know - I've fixed the button being unclickable in some resolutions (it was covered by the descriptions, and therefore the game wouldn't accept clicks).FruitAndGarbage wrote:I'm having a problem similar(ish) to the one Sradac was having earlier; namely, I simply can't play the game at all, in my case because the "Play!" button that appears after inputting all character options is unclickable. As for the link, it seems that something got borked with the upload, will upload another test version today.

Re: The Veins of the Earth
Cool, thanks for getting back to me so promptly! I played a much older version of this module a while back, and I really enjoyed it; I was very disappointed it didn't want to work.

Re: The Veins of the Earth
I've been having a handful of issues:
On starting the game, it gives me the choice to do the tutorial or not; if I select no, the game works fine, but if I select yes, I get this error and the the playscreen goes black, leaving only the skill hotbar visible. Attempting to use any skill results in this error. Other inputs like opening the menu and help screen work fine, but actually playing the game is impossible.
If I try to load a premade character, it starts the game normally (but does not give me the option to do the tutorial); however, upon moving or taking any action, the player tile is replaced by what the old player tiles used to be (ie, a green-robed figure for some spellcasters, a cloaked guy for rogues, etc) but overlayed with the equipment the new character tile would have had overlayed on it. The skill hotbar will not be present, nor will tactical borders. Bump attacks and movement work normally, and you can open your skill menu with m or your spellbook, but spellcasters will know no spells and attempting to use any skill that requires a target will bring back tactical borders, but the game will stop accepting any input and must be force-quit.
Ignizzar's Fire seems to be completely nonfunctional; casting it allows you to select a target, but on selecting a target it gives this error and the turn does not pass. Additionally, it does not seem to count as a fire spell for the purposes of Firey Blast (which is mostly disappointing because I was hoping that'd be a workaround that made wizards playable until they got level 3 spells).
Attempting to load a saved VotE file results in the T-Engine telling me it's not compatible with 1.2.x and recommending I download an older version.
All of the above happens in T-Engine 1.2.2 with VotE 19.6 (which shows up as 20.0 in T-Engine) on a computer running OS X 10.8.5.
E: Oh, also sometimes I'll pick up an item and after the intuition check resolves the item will disappear.

Re: The Veins of the Earth
Been playing even more and have been trying to take note of bugs and issues as I encounter or remember them; a lot of this is probably already known, and some of it may be just plain wrong, but I've tried to be pretty conscientious and accurate. Hopefully I'm not clogging up your thread too much or reporting too many false bugs:
- Cloak sprite covers player tile
- Equipping two weapons that have sprites overlays them both in the player tile's right hand
- Sometimes items disappear after intuition check is made but before entering inventory, sometimes items disappear before intuition check is made after g is pressed, sometimes an item will be picked up but no intuition check will be made (although it can then be dropped and picked back up like it was new, resulting in a normal check or any of these three other options if my luck is bad enough). Can't figure out a pattern here
- All types of bags accept all types of items. Don't know if this is intentional, haven't found a difference in capacity
- Food clock seems to have no measurable effects; have been at Starved! stage for thousands of turns.
- Autoexplore routinely walks characters into visible pits that characters under level 9 have no chance of succeeding on the jump check for (DC 30 not to drop down several levels seems… excessive); a feature that prompts before walking onto holes might be nice
- Non-spell skills (stealth, diplomacy, etc) check spell failure rate on bards (possibly other spellcasters while wearing armor, haven't done that yet) while user is wearing armor
- Bards get no spells?
- Shaman has no spellbook since it's a spontaneous-cast class, but cure light wounds requires memorization for use and is thus unusable
- Shopkeepers will trigger their dialogue multiple times in many circumstances, especially if you're moving slowly
- Pickaxes appear nonfunctional: using one while at full health results in the message "Dug for 0 turns (stop reason: you feel fully rested)", and I haven't been able to be hurt enough that I can dig long enough to actually dig through any of the treasure/mineral veins that show up.
- My longest-lived characters have been rogues, so the only prestige class I've gotten has been shadowdancers; shadowdancer levels do not appear on character sheet, and so far I have gotten no actual benefits from taking shadowdancer levels
- Poison works on inorganic enemies like shield guardians, air elementals, etc; there does not seem to be a way to check which poison you have applied to a weapon, nor any way to see what the effects of any given poison are
- Messages at the top of the screen never go away until they are replaced, which means I am constantly being welcomed to VotE until my character is poisoned, at which point I am eternally informed I am poisoned even after the stat debuff wears off
- Have yet to find a way to use the pickpocket skill, although I may just not have encountered a situation it's usable in
- Blind status effect has no visible effect on player or NPCs; perhaps noticeable is a better word here
- Many egos lack in-game description; specific magical items (holy avenger, nine lives stealer, etc) lack description
- No tooltip for items in shopkeeper interface, makes it hard to decide whether to buy something
- You're informed of spell effects regardless of whether the caster or effect is offscreen: if an NPC with cleric skills escapes me, I'll be told whenever it heals until I leave the level; same for faerie fire and darkness and offscreen NPCs I notice with what I assume are listen checks slipping on ice
- NPC spellcasters frequently use Show Spellbook skill
- Burnt out lanterns use a lantern sprite, non-burnt lanterns use a torch sprite
- After picking up multiple items, encumbrance is not checked until another action is taken
- No readily-apparent way to tell which targets are appropriate for diplomacy or animal empathy
- Elder earth elementals consistently proc The Saddest Face debuff on player
- Quarterstaff cannot have another weapon wielded in the offslot, but can be wielded in the offslot of another weapon
- Intelligence points from equipment grant extra skillpoints on level if the equipment is worn when the class point is assigned
- Passive identification will never identify equipped items
- Stat points cannot be put into wisdom or charisma
- Rings of providence spawn despite luck being unimplemented
- Message log does not appear when f2 is pressed
- Wands my rogue/shadowblade makes himself start out unidentified but named "wand of (whatever spell they contain)", but when they're passively identified they just become known as "wand". This makes them hard to tell apart
Re: The Veins of the Earth
Thanks for the detailed reports, Fruit!
Some of the things reported work fine on Windows. I assume it's due to OS X being more sensitive to upper case/lower case in file names. That's almost certainly the case for tutorial failing to work, for example.
Food clock effects are not implemented yet, I wanted to know first if 500 turns per stage is ok or too excessive.
Bards seem to be bugged, same for pickaxes.
I haven't been able to fix the messages at the top not disappearing, might just ax them completely. Seems an engine problem, same for encumbrance not being checked immediately.
The rest of the things are either outright bugs or oversights.
Moddable tiles are still WIP, so the input is invaluable (especially the fact that I forgot to disable old tiles on loading pre-mades). Hotbar not showing up for premades is a known problem I haven't been able to fix yet.

Re: The Veins of the Earth
Another batch of notes, hopefully I'm not wasting too much of your time or brainspace:
- Club does not indicate what type of weapon it is
- Hand crossbow does not list range
- Javelin lists range 3 but appears to only function as melee
- Succeeded on a jump check over a pit, fell down anyway
- Owl's Wisdom, Eagle's Splendour, Bear's Endurance, and Bull's Strength all unusable for shaman due to requiring memorization
- Water elementals' description describes them as an earth elemental
- Arcane version of summon mount never summons a mount, results in this error
- Summon Monster 1 always summons a wolf, regardless of which summon is selected
- Fireball results in this error upon selecting a target
- Attempting to alter self to a human results in this error
- Altering self to lizardfolk does not change player tile, altering self to drow does
- Light's targeting shows a radius 4 ball, only actually lights a radius 1 ball
- Polymorph only allows polymorphing to cloaker, attempting to become cloaker results in this error
- Neither levitate nor fly allow player to cross pit tiles nor ice tiles
- Improved identify does not identify equipped items
- Raven familiar lists +3 to appraise checks, does not boost anything
- Reaching level 10 attempts to grant an achievement, but causes this error
- No tooltip on mousing over spell icons in spellbook, which makes it difficult to select between spells that have a ? icon
- Some spell names in spellbook cannot be moused over for description and must be selected with the keyboard; clicking on those that register mouseover results in this error
- Only 10 spell icons in each level group have an available/memorized indicator
- Wizard/Cleric/Druid spells above level 2 appear on hotbar but not in spellbook
- Ghoul touch debuff has no visible effect
- Using look command results in this error
- Paladins/rangers must memorize spells (other than summon mount for paladoins) but have no spellbook
- Wild shape has no visible effect on stats/attributes/skills
Re: The Veins of the Earth
Fruit, thanks for the invaluable input. I think you're the only player I'm aware of who has OS X, and obviously some things need fixing specially for this OS (tutorial and error messages for skills).
What you listed is a heap of bugs/oversights, except this:

This is an engine limitation - and it means I'll have to whip up the missing icons prontoNo tooltip on mousing over spell icons in spellbook, which makes it difficult to select between spells that have a ? icon

Lying is bad Zireael !
It's not engine limitation, you can pop a tooltip whereever and whenever you desire one

Re: The Veins of the Earth
I've fixed the tutorial and removed the log flasher.
Mouse input doesn't work and the only way to continue the game is to press ESC. I've tried to identify the issue, to no avail, Sebsebeleb has said he'll take a look at it.
EDIT: Actually, mouse input does work (you can target via mouse, it's just left-click which doesn't work, you need to press space to target) Even weirder.
This problem shows up on all characters. The game *does* accept input, but only keyboard input (ESC, arrows or space to confirm).attempting to use any skill that requires a target will bring back tactical borders, but the game will stop accepting any input and must be force-quit.

Re: The Veins of the Earth
Looks like the problem is Game.logdisplay. It's created with extremely large dimensions, so when Game:setupMouse calls registerZone to set up scrolling for the log display, it ends up intercepting many of the map interactions. Or Mouse:delegate may let you delegate non-wheel events from logdisplay to the map; I'd have to play around with that some more to see how it'd work.Zireael wrote:This problem shows up on all characters. Try reducing logdisplay's dimensions, or just get rid of mouse interactions for it.
By the way, this kind of problem isn't too hard to track down using Git; just switch/checkout to past revisions (either manually or using Git bisect) until you find the revision where the problem started, then examine the changes in that revision (and revert them one at a time if needed) to see what could have caused it.
Re: The Veins of the Earth
Thanks for the tip Castler. Will look into it today once I'm done with end-of-university-year paperwork.
I'm not a master of Git and I never realized you could check out older revisions.
Last time I had to track down a bug, I ended up reverting and re-committing stuff
EDIT: Also, thanks for fixing a few UI issues.
