I just saw that I had the casting vote at the count of 29 votes, but really I think of it as ToME. That's it.

When the name first changed to ToME I thought it was "troubles" because the dragonriders had been summoned to Middle Earth in its time of trouble. Sort of a quick way to remove "Pern" from the title. w

By the way, I wasn't going to go through the trouble of making an account, but I did so I could vote and return balance to the poll. he.he

Sloseri: Welcome to ToME!

Please don't reference Anne McCaffrey's world or critters here, it's a copyright issue. Thanks.

Is that why "PernAngband" has been changed into ToME?

Whenever I showed the game to others, posted it on other message boards I always said it was Troubles of middle earth. I think that sounds a bit better

(in response to Sly)

Exactly, which is why Troubles of Middle Earth makes a lot more sense considering the story of PernAngband, which I foolishly uttered in public...

Yeah. McCaffrey goes after people with rabid racoons if she detects even a whiff of anyone thinking about her works in any context that doesn't involve a massive profit for her. So the DarkGod, who created the original as a tribute -- nonprofit, obviously -- was forced to strip away elements related to that Name That Shall Not Be Spoken.

I've seen a discussion of this over on the wiki: http://wiki.t-o-m-e.net/PernAngband

While rabid raccoons are certainly a highlight, Hunter, bad language around here is likely to stir up almost as much annoyance as Anne McCaffrey.

Ah yes, and I've just found this in one of the lua help patches. I'm sure it bears no relation whatsoever to the incident:

Code: Select all

We are humble toy-makers, designing entertainments for the young, (and
young at heart) of Middle-Earth.

Recently, we have faced competition. A larger group of well -
established toy-makers, "Hoobiz Offt" have set up next door to us, and
are demanding we change our name. They appear to want to trade off
the back of it.

If we do not change our name, which we refuse to do on the grounds of
ethics and our good reputation, they say we must pay them a large sum
of money. As we do this for fun, we never make a profit which will be
large enough to satisfy their demands. They have threatened to set
their thugs on us. We think they may have dragons too.
Heh. :P

Bad language? Eh? You mean "[bleep]"? Well, I suppose, though it does also have a fairly staid meaning in Brit slang as "a contemptible person." But it's a judgment call, and if a mod wants to change it, I'll respect the decision.
