The main complaint with the idea seems to be that mages would be too easy.
So...
That makes Vanilla Angband and many of the earlier variants EASY does it?

Serin's ideas are exactly what I was talking about when I suggested the IDEA. :D Sure, it would be a good idea to alter the schools in a mod. before making them more widespread, if that ever needed to happen. :o

Apparently it wouldn't take too long. I would do it myself if I had any idea how but I don't. :(
To be honest I just wanted to see what sort of support a return to the old magic system (and prayer system) would have, and it would seem it's not too contraversial an idea after all... :)

I am going to start as soon as finals are over! I don't know how long it will take but I don't have classes this summer, just work, so hopefully not that long.... :? I would make it available if a) it works, and b)there is more interest....

My only beef with the magic system is that you can't cast spells at lower than their maximum level. So many of my purer mages have died because they can't cast another manathrust that I've given up on the mana school. Noxious Cloud no longer does damage to poison-resistant monsters after it switches damage types, so I often have Geomancers specifically failing to raise it for long periods of time.

I realize that this is probably intentional as a balancing mechanism for the magic classes, but it does make me rather desperate for a working Runecraft system.

My CL28 Priest is toddling along quite decently with a 25% fail on Manathrust! (Supposedly this goes to zero at some point with Perfect Casting?? I have no idea when. I'm not used to this mage schtuff )

It IS rather embarassing when I wipe out a series of nasty monsters with one Manathrust each, and then the spell starts failing on me. I can just hear the gun: Click...click... oh darn it... *kicks next monster in the shins*

I once tried a mage who used Water and Nature magic, and was good with a sword too. Actually worked quite well. Believe it or not, Geyser wasn't as big a weak point as I thought it would be, once I got to the point where I had a lot of mana and a high Water skill.

ROTFLMAO    this has happened too many times to count! (with a sorcerer and only a 4% fail rate!!!)

Gahh. That crap happens all the time.

Once I had a mage with a 0% fail rate for Fireflash. Something had just summoned greater demons near me, and I needed to wipe them out immediately. (Why? Because they included 2 Horned Reapers and a Greater Balrog.) I cast Fireflash 4 times before dying, and failed 3 out of 4 times. And remember, this was with a 0% fail rate.

Not that I have a problem with fail rates never reaching 0%. In a situation where a player is nervous, a char should be scared silly... perhaps even scared enough to forget basic magic.
