So, is my automap bugged?

Shouldn't the explored areas (basically the whole level in this case) be dark grey or something, instead of background color?
I reported it as a bug, but then I saw some of the automaps in the Steam video, and while some of them looked like what I imagined they should look like, others were more akin to what you see in the linked image.
So what's going on? Is this a very old but known bug, or am I missing something?

Re: Automap
unlit tiles don't get mapped.
not sure if its intended or not... but its a feature now. its just how it is.
tiles will get mapped properly if you light them.
you can use:
-illuminate
-brandish
-bathe in light
-throw bomb with the right gem
-shimmertide vial, or whatever was the name of that artefact light
-sun infusion
maybe some other

Re: Automap
Very interesting! I was holding off on playing more due to this issue, but now that I understand what it is about I can go back to playing. Thanks!
Re: Automap
extra, there are spells and other talents, that reveal the terrain without lighting it up.
for example:
-vision (generic-divination)
-earth's eye (nature gift generic/call of the wild)
maps and reveals all tiles in range, letting you know what terrain it is, and what items there are on the ground. doesn't however reveal creatures.

Re: Automap
Thanks for the extra info! I'll keep my eyes open for these things, though I'm finding that normal entrances/stairs and walls being revealed has been sufficient so far, especially since there doesn't seem to be a mechanic that punishes loitering (starvation or something else, though I'm guessing it will show in my final score).
