te4.org Home Page Woes

#1 Post by nsrr »

Now, don't get me wrong, I prefer that all of you wonderful people who put so much time and effort into ToME spend as much of that time and effort as possible on developing the game (Honestly, I can't thank you enough. We are not worthy of such an awesome game, and you literally give it away!)

That being said, there are a couple of things that bother me, just a little, every time I visit te4.org. I don't really know if this is the appropriate place to communicate it, but I'm not really sure were else I would. (Aside from contacting darkgod directly, but I'd rather not bother him with something that's mostly trivial. I'd prefer he notice and address it, or not, at his leisure.)

I think the number of players currently online has only been off since Embers released, but I can't say for sure. I can say I didn't notice it until afterwards, though. This isn't really a big deal, except it means one or both of these numbers is incorrect. If people are visiting the site for the first time and considering playing or donating, even a little inconsistency like this might give the impression that the folks running ToME don't know what they are doing. That is certainly not an impression I would want anyone to have.

The total playtime has been off (or has never been updated to real-time stats?) for as long as I have been playing ToME, at least according to the real-time data you see during loading, which seems to have been increasing fairly consistently. The current total is well over double this number. That is no small thing, mind you. There are civilizations that have risen and crumbled in less time than people have spent playing ToME. Technically "over 340 years" is still true, and is quite impressive, but 700 some-odd is that much more impressive. And the more impressed people are the more they will want to shower his darkness with money, something I think we can all agree does not happen often enough

This is meant as constructive criticism, and in a perfect world darkgod would be hilariously wealthy and could snap his fingers and have this taken care of by his psionic-powered robo-servant. Our world is gloriously imperfect, however. Given that, I would much prefer any time that he can devote to development be spent on just that. Not to be greedy, but even with Embers just out I still want more ToME

If I knew anything at all about web development or the mechanics used for the real-time statistics I would gladly volunteer my time to help correct these minor flaws so that everyone gets the best possible impression of ToME, but sadly I do not

In lieu of being able to help directly , I just set up a recurring donation, and I highly encourage anyone else who enjoys ToME enough to have ended up here, in the Bugs forum, to do the same if they have not already. If I could somehow broadcast this message to everyone who plays, I gladly would. I don't know how much it will take for darkgod to work on ToME full time and be able to share the wealth with his fellow developers, but I sincerely hope we reach that level of donation some day.

I hope you all continue the great work for many years to come, and, again, I really cannot thank you enough. (Seriously, there's not enough money in bank account  )
