Daikara has been kicking my teeth in lately.

#1 Post by Tasidar »

My last four or five roguelike heroes sadly ended their journey early in Daikara. Anyone feel like this place is packing more punch lately? Feels embarrassing. Its not like I even opened up the giant hall vault or anything.

My last Temporal Warden died there while waiting for the killing blow from his future self, in order to unlock the Paradox Mage, and another creature landed the killing shot first :-) This was probably the most stupid death I have ever experienced on TOME.

I've always found Daikara to be the hardest of the second tier dungeons. That and Tempest Peak, seeing as they are so similar, always give me a bit of trouble.

The combination of elemental spells and long range are a headache.

It's the giant boulder throwers. They do their damage in a big chunk and knock you back so far that they've cooled down by the time you can get back into range.

I've said it before, but the boulders REALLY should be actual projectiles that can be dodged. I see no reason they would hit instantly, in fact they should be slower than arrows or sling shots, likely.

(And the damage should be split between 'direct hit' and 'area', so you can do a partial dodge)

I've had several deaths here. I find it's good to be patient - back up, use corners for line of sight/retreat purposes, take on a few at a time. It's when you push yourself, thinking "Yeah I'm under half health here, but I've got this, I won't teleport. *DUN DUN DUNNNN* Oh shit!" That focus fire burst from multiple sources you weren't expecting, a lightning bolt, a slime ball, a rock, an ice bolt all at once. Or that nasty status (confuse/stun) when your infusion is on cooldown. Have a plan and equipment setup for all possible situations.
"You could skip it, i think it drops 0 xp and 1 copper [at most], you are better off selling oxygen to beggars to become rich."

For boulder throwers, a good shield, knockback resistance and either good long range attacks or a way to quickly bridge the gap is necessary. I always prioritize these guys higher than everybody else. If I get boulder throwers combined with rares, then I run and try to find ways to pick off the stragglers. Some kind of telepathy helps a lot with this. I used to die to these guys all the time, but I haven't died to them for a while (knock on wood). I think the main thing is that I raise my shield any time I see these guys. That gives me some breathing room in the case that I get whacked. If you don't have a shield, then start regeneration immediately, or pop a very good wild infusion (wild infusion with vitality is a very good combo for fighter types).
