I do not recommend going by the tier list. It's oriented towards higher difficulties and if you're asking how to not die that's not your concern.

The Tier S list is based not on how easy it is to not die, but entirely on the presence of some gimmick that can beat Madness. They're all fiddly and difficult to use, though the archmage is least so.

For ease of not dieing at normal difficulty the passive tanking classes are best. That's the solipsist, wyrmic, sun paladin, mindslayer, and oozemancer. None are Tier S and one is down at Tier C, though it is the weakest passive tank.

Other than that I would agree with most of the advice given here (except Stone Alchemy...).

Actually, yeah, for full disclosure I should say pretty much all I used Stone Alchemy for was getting gold and buffing Money is Power. I only managed to get both a good chest piece, and good gem, in the very last floors of High Peak. Prior to that, it seemed like I'd be wasting one or the other.
