Well, yes, but they're only helpful once you've got a *lot* of prayer skill, and most normal classes don't have the points to pour into that category.
Although your point is well taken and I suppose a priest of Yavanna would be playable since they would be willing to invest skill in Prayer. But the piety thing is still a drawback.

I'm with you. I enjoy the freedom of not choosing. I'm still new at this game, but so far I find the powers of a Thunderlord are good enough to not need a god to worship, and the quests outside of temple quests are great to get stuff.Atarlost wrote:I'm still using 2.1.1 or something, but I find that the best diety is usually NONE. Thus, my ToME charachters are usually agnostics.

I can bet you never got a Yavanna quest at clevel 2Lord Dimwit wrote:I love the Melkor temple; I grimly tolerate the Eru, Tulkas, and Yavanna temples, but the Manwe temple can just bite me. Damn mists everywhere, huge levels with nothing on them, lousy item-stealing monsters roaming around... And lord help you if you don't have see invisible.

I think I have got that quest before; I just put it off until a higher level
Any god quest at all can be a terror at level 2. The Melkor temple, for example, has nether mists that can take a character under level 10 down to level 1 in one hit. So you wind up trying to kill all those ultra-kobolds while wading through lava with only 16 hp or so.

Prayer takes a lot of skill points if you're not a Priest, but if you're willing to invest in it the benefits can be great. Eru isn't too useful for warrior classes, and Yavanna is just tough (her only real benefits are the magic she grants you, and that requires investment in the Magic skill too...), but if you're running a magical (or semi-magical) class, you can really get something worthwhile.
I ran a Mage once who neglected the Mana and Divination schools completely and just dumped his skill into Prayer. This gave him all sorts of nice spells (Manathrust
) as well as more mana, god spells (Lay of protection
) and extra WIS too.
I ran a Monk once who worshipped Manwe and pumped his Prayer level up to 50. Manwe's Blessing is better (in my opinion) than Divine Aim at higher levels (+ 50 to hit!), and that spell plus Wind Shield plus Avatar makes even a comparatively wimpy Monk into a destructo-machine. But Manwe's magic is terrible (though I kind of like having Recharge).
To sum up: Prayer can be extremely useful for certain characters, but it's certainly an acquired taste.

Well, having played more than I had at the time of my previous post in this thread, I have to say I prefer Manwe. Speed boosts are nothing to sneeze at, nor is noxious cloud. (it's more something to cough and gag at) Recharge is also nice.

MANWE!
well, i just got the new version (2.2.3), after having played on the old 2.1.0 for a long time, so we'll have to see if the gods are different now.
however, i have to say i prefer Manwe, if for no other reason than the insane (+7) speed boosts he gives. who doesn't like moving really really fast?
well, download's done, g2g play ToME!

I'm not sure I picked the right god for my Assassin. I'd always played Eru characters before; I knew I had to pick someone else, and kept reading about people praising Tulkas. So that's what who I chose.
But here's the thing. Once I played this Assassin for a while, this is what I noticed:
Pros:
The damage boost in melee while praying is quite welcome.
The plusses to STR and CON are welcome.
Cons:
Divine Aim: That'd be nice, but she's got Critical hits nearly maxed anyway.
Spread Blows: Well, that'd okay. I actually bought the Spread Blows ability before I realized that that was for the type of char that gets 15-20 blows/round in. (She currently gets 6 blows/round.) Ooops, waste of skill points! (?)
Wave of Power: Again, that'd be nice, but she only gets 6 hits.
And the skill points I'd have to invest to gain these so-so benefits would take away from other things I'd rather spend on.
Access to Stone school: Again, getting Stone Prison would be awesome, but the skill points aren't worth it.
Right now, at CL 38 and 2 (count'em!) points of Prayer, she could (if she chose to lug around the spellbook) cast Divine Aim and Stone Skin. Not worth it.
Instead I have a few points into Mindcraft and Thaumaturgy (FF was kind), and those are a heck of a lot more useful. I'm still hoping FF will give her Symbiosis (*cross fingers, knock on wood*).
Here's the dump, if anyone's interested.

If I hadn't 'wasted' all those points in Dodging, maybe I could have put them into spells... but probably not. Can't decide to try it if FF offers me Barehand

I've read other posts saying there should be a god for Thief types... I think that would be a good idea.

You might actually consider rethinking that. Stone Prison is an extremely powerful spell for dealing with summoners and other nasties, like, say, Ancalagon or Sauron.Maylith wrote:Access to Stone school: Again, getting Stone Prison would be awesome, but the skill points aren't worth it.
Stone Skin is nothing for a melee character to sneeze at, either.

I'm with you here, even made my choice to that axe which gives me 3 additional points in wisdom.Blackdog wrote:You might actually consider rethinking that. Right now I'm discovering the benefits of stone prison and it's great.
The interesting point: I've got exactly that axe from Ancalagon the Black in a greater vault, Mordor level 60.
A close call it was, and I used up 6 potions of Healing and 2 of *Healing*.
With Stone Prison the battle would have been much easier I guess.
Btw, you call Ancalagon and Sauron in the same line.
Are they comparable on each other and does it mean I already would have the slightest chance against Sauron?
