Escort Quests

#1 Post by Multiplicity »

Does anybody else get annoyed by these quests? I mean, I have such a hard time getting most of them to safety because they run off and get themselves killed... or better yet, get a hoard of monsters after them. They plead for help but they beeline straight for the portal with disregard to anything else except when a baddie is near, then he attacks it. My last... shortlived session just made me sigh because I got an escort quest on the same level Bill the Troll was on. Well, guess what? The guy I helped decides to bullheadedly charge Bill who was in the fog of war a few tiles away from me. Well, the dude got his butt handed to him on a silver platter and Bill bull rushes me into a corner I could not escape out of and didn't have the means to escape. Gee, thanks Mr Sun Paladin for getting me blindsided. I'm about ready to kill these damn escorts myself since they already have a deathwish.

There is a special achievement for killing several them yourself :D

They are frustrating and difficult, but the rewards are also extremely nice if you can pull it off. Ultimately it's an optional side-quest that you can ignore if you feel it puts you at too much risk.

In case you weren't aware, you can right-click and order the escorts to stay put for a few turns. It doesn't always work, and the length of time they stay put is very short, but every little bit helps...

Slightly better AI for the escorts would of course make these quests much less of a crapshoot. Limiting the distance the escort is willing to walk ahead of the PC, and having it avoid melee with enemies significantly stronger than itself (e.g. bosses and uniques) would be a great start.

Yeah, I know of the limited options of being given a vague idea where the portal is and have him wait a bit. Still can get annoying with those options. Like the example I gave in my first post. I was only a couple turns into the area when the dude charged Bill like a blind idiot lol.

They frustrate me so often...

"Please... I don't thi-*cough* I don't think I can make it... help me... get to the *cough* portal... I'm barely alive."

"Ok, I'll just go ahead and clear a path so you-"

"HEY GREAT THANKS OFF I GO THEN YOU CAN'T CATCH ME LET'S ATTACK THIS COLD DRAKE LOL OH IT BURNS WHY DOES IT BURN WHEN IT'S COLD!?"

They desperately try and throw themselves into combat even when they are two steps from the portal. I actually had one who tried to walk PAST the portal to attack a monster but I dimensional stepped onto the portal as he passed it and switch him into it. HAH. TAKE THAT. TRY DYING NOW.

It would be nice if, at least, escorts do not spawn in levels with bosses, since there is pretty much no situation where you can save an escort from a boss (possible exceptions include controlled forms of teleport, or if you're able to toe-to-toe a boss that has no area effects in a one tile path). This means generally the final level of the various dungeons, but potentially also Daikara 4 when you're a temporal warden (being immediately set upon by your future self absolutely guarantees that you can't save the escort), or any level of Daikara if Hazor'kun spawns.

Anyone who did software freelancing know that that is typical client behavior.

I registered on this forum just so I could communicate how angry these quests make me. If I ever met the creator of this game in person I might punch him in the jewels

Welcome to the forums, you awfully pleasant person.

There is a special key you can use to make escort quests less aggravating. Simply right-click on the escort in question and choose "Attack".

No. Why?
I just had a quest with no less than two poison vine in the very first corridor.
The quest was over before I spotted the first enemy.

"Poison vine killed Ivoyatta, the injured seer"

Quest 'Escort: Injured seer (level 2 of Nargos lair failed"

Why would anyone get annoyed by such a failure?

< = Stairs
@ = Tom
@ = Lavyriata, the worried loremaster
* = Poison vine
1 = The room opens up

So at lvl 2 this is the setup.
Tom walks up, and turns left, only to hit the poison vine.

Yay!! Only one this time!!! :D

Lavyriata follows (ofcourse) and gets poisoned.
This, while Tom kills some snakes in the room 1.
After 2 or 3 moves into the now empty (of enemies) room, Lavyriata suddenly remembers something she must have forgotten.
She walks back onto the poison vine a second time.

And ofcourse, two times is one to many.
She dies.

No, Im not annoyed.
Not the slightest.....

Traps can be tricky. What I've done - it may work - is:. You stand on the vine. Switch places with the escort. Becausd he didn't walk there, your action put him there, it doesn't trigger the trap. However. It does expose him to the rest of the lvl you've not seen. You may want to ask him to swait to give you a chance to walk in front again. But you can only do it once.
