[1.7.4] Meteor destroys portal

I was in in the Far East desert, ready to go to the Volcano, i talked to the paladin about how he shouldn't worry, i know how to use the portal and and immediately after that, a meteor falls from the sky and BOOM! , no more portal. I can't activate the orb of many ways as the tile has changed to lava. I still see the graphics for a portal but the exit tile is now lava. Admittedly, a rather funny and ironic incident, the game is again making fun of me.
