Help! My Saves keep not working.

Good day,

Hoping someone has the knowledge I need to get this game working for me. I've only played a handful of dungeons over and over and over again due to death/crashes/and saves not loading. I currently have 2 characters at level 15 a level 12 and a level 14 that won't load. If you'd like I can try to get the error reports for each of them ... If you need anything else from me please let me know. I have no idea what I'm doing here, or what exactly is relevant

PC Specs
Processor - Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-14900K (3.20 GHz)
RAM - 64.0 GB (63.7 GB usable)
Edition - Windows 11 Home

I tried loading another save that hasn't been loading... I found this a ways up in the logs from where the error is recorded. Hope it means something to someone that can help. I also posted the portion that gets submitted below.

Welcome to the forums WinNowLoseLater,

Do you have any mods activated? (aside from DLC like Ashes, Embers or Cults). Can you try running t-engine-debug.exe and loading your game with that?

No I do not. I wanted to get some unlocks and get a good grasp of the game before messing with any kind of add ons or anything like that. To be fair, this game looks like I'll have years worth of entertainment just from the base games. I just have to get past these problems. I did try a new character and made it to level 8 before the game crashed.. and I had another dead save. (Sigh)

Sorry, I had originally read your response while at work. I looked at it again just a moment ago and saw that you had asked I try it with T-engine-debug.exe.

I tried the save I had posted above and unfortunately I got another error. I'll give the other saves a shot just to see if any of them can be saved this way. (Will update this with an edit)

Edit - This save doesn't give me the option to send an error report. It just freezes the game at 100% loading. If I click around... the screen resizes and flashes a few times but then it goes back to a black screen and I get the main menu music. I wasn't able to use steam to close the game down (as I was running the t-engine-debug.exe). I had to use the task manager. It refused to close from the taskbar.

Could you include an (edited please, since this file can be huge - just the first and last 30-40 lines) copy of the te4_log.txt file (this should be in the Tales of Maj'Eyal program folder).

If you have Tales of Maj'Eyal installed in your Program Files folder, check that UAC has been disabled and that Controlled Folder Access is not enabled for this folder (it may be easier to install Tales of Maj'Eyal somewhere outside of the Program Files folder, like a separate Games folder to avoid UAC complications, but leave it for now) or the savegame folder (%USERPROFILE%\T-Engine\4.0\tome\save\).

Also check your savegame folder for any files with a .tmp extension - these are intermediate files created during a save and should normally be renamed/removed, so if any are still present it may indicate something interfering with the savegame process.

I suspect that something is causing savegame corruption given you have what seems to be a similar error occurring at different stages of the game. As a workaround, it might be worth installing file versioning software and using that to keep running backups of your savegame folder (this type of software monitors a folder and copies files to another folder when they change, while renaming previous versions with a "(backup X)" suffix so you can copy back a previous version). The software I use and would recommend would be Aphar Backup (archived webpage is Dutch, but the software runs in English) but other alternatives exist (Yadis Backup, AutoVer or the commercial File Hamster).

With one of these installed, as long as you save regularly, you should then always have the option to go back to a previous (hopefully working) savegame (you should only need to copy back the appropriate game.teag file).

Here's the log text. I did try playing a bit last night and the game ended up crashing on me. So the last 30-40 lines look like they might be reflecting that crash? I'm including a little more than what you had asked for, it looks like there are a bunch nearly repeating lines at both ends, I'm assuming you can kind of skip over those and hopefully find something important that can help.

Checked the different saves, 2 of the 9 had a .tmp extension. The rest were .teal or .teaz or a combination of both.

Thanks for the info - the one item of significance I noted was that you are running the Steam version so UAC is unlikely to be an issue. The presence of the .tmp files in your saved games folder could be more significant though. Are you using cloud saves or any utility that provides similar functionality? Try disabling them to see if that helps.

Another option is to install Process Monitor and use its filters to view any access to your TOME saved games folder (only t-engine.exe should be accessing this normally) - any other process doing so should be investigated.

Well... unfortunately for me.. as things stand this game is currently nearly unplayable for me. As irritating as doing the first few levels is over and over without losing my characters to death... I'd probably pop a blood vessel if this was happening at the end of the game haha.
Giving it a shot on my Steam deck... maybe... things won't mess up over there? I appear to be the odd man out with the save issues...

Oh! I hadn't seen your response just above before posting this. I'll try that out as well and see if it makes a difference. I didn't mess with any settings... so if cloud saves or on by default i'll try having them turned off.

Doesn't look like steam even offers the option for cloud saves. Went to turn it off and it's just not available as an option.

Question... if I bought the game on steam, would I be able to download the client through Te4? And just play it off steam? Like maybe steam was the issue here... or would I need to purchase the game and all the DLC over again to try that? Maybe steam is the issue here? I just find it hard to believe I'm the only person playing this game with these issues.. :?

I would just mention again the use of file versioning as a workaround - it would allow you to at least to go back to a previous working savegame.

Another thing to try though is turning off background saves (press Esc in-game to bring up the Game Menu, then Game Options/Misc/Background Saves/Disable).

Actually I was going to suggest downloading the free version, installing that separately and seeing if you get the same problem.

It's probable that there is something specific about your setup (hardware/software) contributing to these issues - hence the recommendation about using Process Monitor above. If you don't want to go down that road, then the best alternative I can suggest is disconnecting your PC from the Internet (TOME will still work, you just won't have the online features), disabling all security software and anything else running in the background you don't absolutely need (use Task Manager to check what you have running) and then try TOME again to see if that helps.

Finally, above you mentioned finding a couple of .tmp files in your saved games folder - could you specify which filenames these had? Also could you check your TOME Program Files folder for a debug.log file and post the last 20 or so lines from that?
