According to the log, and the saving screens, the game saves anywhere from 2 to 4 times any time you change an area (or level, if that option is disabled). WHYYYYYYYYYY? When returning from the east, you spent more time looking at loading screens than actually playing the game, which is slightly frustrating to say the least.
And that is w/o steam cloud saves disabled - that would add another save on everything
