Can't start a new character
The Embers release created a nightmare of crashes for me. It seemed to conflict with most of the add-ons I'd accumulated, and even when I managed to start the game an create a character, I was faced with constant error messages. Then the game started to crash, frequently, the frequency increasing until I reached the point where I could play for under a minute at a time before having to restart (using Task Manager). Then I found that I can't start a new character at all. When I try, there's a flash on the screen as though an error report has appeared for a fraction of a second, but I can't be sure; otherwise, nothing happens. I've turned off all the add-ons aside from the game modules, but it makes no difference.
I've just Searched for te4_log.txt and nothing came up.... The latest couple of files from the error-reports directory read:
error = "Lua Error: /engine/Birther.lua:57: /data-ejhybrids/birth/classes/tinker.lua:66: table index is nil\

Re: Can't start a new character
that's an addon causing the conflict, that addon will need to be turned off. I don't recognize ejhybrids however. What addons are you running?
Edit: Appears to be this addon - http://te4.org/games/addons/tome/ejhybrids
Disable it, start a new game after it's disabled.
Alternately, try a fresh install of tome. (if you're running the steam version, download a copy on the site so it's actually a 'different' install.)
If it's not letting you after that, post your logfile on pastebin and a link to it here.

Re: Can't start a new character
Ah, OK -- then the flash that I see when I try to start a new character can't be an error message; I'd disabled all add-ons (except for Vault, Stone Warden, Ashes, and Embers). I've just tried to start a new character again, and the same thing happened, with no new error mesage generated in the werror-report file. I'll try a new install of the game engine, and see what happens, thanks.

Re: Can't start a new character
It's been suggested a corrupted world file might be to blame. Find the file world.teaw and move it elsewhere. (desktop works) Game should recreate a new one, and if the problem persists, we can eliminate that as well.
Try the fresh install BEFORE this however.

Re: Can't start a new character
Great, thanks -- will do. I'm downloading the game again now. I'll have to do it all later, as I'm going out shortly. I'll post what happens...
Re: Can't start a new character
No effect, I'm afraid. I first insalled t-engine4-windows-1.4.6-nomusic, and when that made no difference I deleted world.teaw -- still no difference. Something is definitely flashing up when I click "New", but too fast for me to see what it is.

Re: Can't start a new character
Can you post your log file to pastebin? (off the fresh install.)

Re: Can't start a new character
Been suggested by the more technical staff, try cleaning out your save folder. Just moving it, if you don't want to risk losing characters, but it's possilbe one of the ones that used this addon is creating an issue.)

Re: Can't start a new character
I've not repopulated my Save folder since reinstalling the game, so it can't be that I'm afraid.
Where do I find the log file, and do you have a link to pastebin, please? I've not used that before.

Re: Can't start a new character
Save folder survives between installs. It's in (on windows) c:/windows/users/yourusernamehere/t-engine/4.0/tome/saves
It's not in the folder with the game you install. So your old saves are all still there. Either move the contents of that folder elsewhere, or delete them?
as for pastebin http://pastebin.com/
post a link here afterwards please.

Re: Can't start a new character
I renamed the T-Engine folder, so that my new install was genuinely and completely fresh -- so there's nothing in its Save sub-folder at the moment. But yes, I've got the old one. There's nothing in it called te4_log, though, or anything like it. I searched ny hard disk for te4_log, and it found nothing.
Sorry to be such a pain.

Re: Can't start a new character
te4_log.txt is in the installed location, not the userfolder. Right next to te4.exe
May not be there if you haven't run the game yet. Wipes each time you start the game fresh, so run it, fail to start a new character, then exit, and post the log.
And no. It's a complicated bug, no need for you to apologize. Though more 'live' help on the IRC channel might solve it faster, if you catch someone wiser then me there.

Re: Can't start a new character
Thanks for all this. I've pasted the file here.
Re: Can't start a new character
I see you have non official addons there. I suggest removing them.
Also, the log file seems to cut off in the main menu. Did you attempt to start a new game?
Enable the flush log option via the launcher or --flush-stdout as a command line option and try it again.

Re: Can't start a new character
I've turned off every add-on except the ones that I listed above (all official); can they affect the game even when deactivated?
[Later: I've just checked, and they were reactivated; I deactivated them, and tried again -- it made no difference.]
The only thing that I've done is try to start a new game -- I get a fleeting glimpse of a pop-up in the middle of the screen, otherwise I just stay in the main menu.
