Maybe its not a "bug" but it is a problem.
Escorting an npc to a portal, often they disappear in the trees and its like where did they go, and then suddenly they are like 10 steps or so away and get killed, and it sucks because I had no idea what way they went and it seems they might even phase through a bunch of trees they get far ahead and then suicidally get killed. Then I have to ctrlaltdel crash the game to get out and try again which is just bad but I'm like, hey I didn't do that, the game did that.

Escorts are frustrating even after playing a long time. Sometimes they're just going to get killed, or get you killed if you try and save them. Aside from being aware of your scouting and movement options, the most important thing is realizing their pathing is actually very straightforward. Most of the time if you stand in front of an escort (even if they could move around you) they'll stop and wait for you to move. They also don't move every turn, so as long as you aren't on a map where you need to stop and mop up a bunch of enemies you can usually stop them, rest, then get ahead of them for a while to scout.
But mostly they're just very, very dumb.

yeah I just had this again last night no matter how I tried, even asked him what direction the portal was. if the terrain has lots of trees, it sucks. If the game at least put a marker on him, like a red circle and made him not run ahead. Another problem is when enemies use area effects and they go through me and hit him, argh. But thats at least reasonable, unlike not being able to see where he is or while I take a few turns to kill an enemy he rushes on into a group of them like a moron.

They do walk quite slowly and you can ask them to stop for a bit.
