Unkillable Oozes?!

Okay, this has happened a few times to me now.

I encounter an ooze, varying colours, and proceed to smash it flat. Only it doesn't die when it gets to 0 hp. Doesn't matter that I'm doing 3x it's original hp in damage either. And worse, it starts spawning. I threw everything I had at it, every damage type available, and nothing, nadda.

Also, it seems to happen on the bottom level of a zone. Is this a coincidence?
