I have completed the Sandworm Lair and am now attempting to return to the surface however I am unable to walk out. For the first time I have seen the huge sandworm burrowers instead of the normal sandworm burrowers and they are only traveling North then East on the first level of Sandworm Lair. I am attempting to travel West to return to the entrance by walking as I prefer to do. The next open block is 16 blocks away 15 of which are sand. When the huge sandworm moves West to East moving at 100% speed to the West it is not possible to make it to the next safe area before a collapse.
Yes, there's several things I can do to get out, teleport, stone walking and using the Wand of recall. While I can and will use one of the above, I feel that this is a bug and not the way the game is supposed to work.
I've attempted to upload my save and I've found the maximum attachment size is 256KB. You do realize that a low quality compressed screenshot at 1900x1200 is more than 300K and further 4K screens are now available to people in general?

Using rod of recall is not a bug, it's intended. That's the reason you get it from the first boss you kill.

So are you saying that the design of the game is such that there are some levels where it's intended that you won't be able to walk out of them, or are you saying that because we know the level generator is sometimes bugged we gave you a rod of recall to let you continue with the game?

You aren't intended to be able to walk out of that version of Sandworm Lair, yes. The design was intended to be a one-way path to the bottom floor when this alt. setup got designed.
In the next version, the Rod of Recall will be given automatically on beating the first boss, so while this could theoretically trap you until you pick up the Rod in this version/trap you period, it won't be able to in future versions, if this is your concern.

Tempest Peak is also impossible to walk out of, if you enter it through the arcane method.
Given that it's a fixed vault(entirely designed and not randomly generated) for the first floor of Tempest Peak, and that you are strenuously warned not to enter unless you have another way to leave besides your feet, I assume some areas being impossible to leave on foot is by design.
Also, I'm pretty sure every boss drops the Rod of Recall if they are your first boss even now.

Thank you Torokasi and Supermini for your answers. In the end I more or less did walk out of the level using a teleport rune with a range of 60 and stone walking with a range of 10. I've been playing Rouge games and Rougelikes since JAMoria and I can't recall a situation I couldn't walk out of, although JAMoria did have traps that dropped you into a lower level of the dungeon, and that might result in your being there without a way to the stairs, however by the time you got to that point, you had come across two or three pickaxes. I haven't seen a level like that before, it's nice to be surprised sometimes. Thanks.

It would be nice if there were a monospaced font available without having to use the code tag, I always like the PRE tag from HTML. Another option that would work well for me is the ability to change the line spacing in the code box, or in general. The Ascii in my signature looks better with slightly tighter line spacing.
