Hi there. Something odd occured to me yesterday.
I went with my lv32 cursed, after clearing the reknar mines, with the recall rod to the fortress and unlocked the training room (checked the damage difference of 2 of my two handswords on a puppet) and farportal for which i obviously killed the bloated horror in the room. After returning with the "teleport to surface" i ended up back again at the entrance to the reknar mines on the world map from where i walked to the icy north because the pop up message said so. I found the giant tree there and tried to enter the zone but loading the zone wouldnt stop even after 10 minutes. So i pressed some buttons , menus , but nothing worked so i killed the task in windows and restarted the game. Now i got a black area screen with a map named "Sludgenest" and an error message as soon as i try to walk. I allready send the error report ingame but i thought it wouldnt hurt to ask about this on the forums.
The error is as follows:
Lua Error:/engine/Map.lua:619: attempt to call a nil value
At [C]:-1
At /engine/Map.lua:619 checkAllEntities
At /engine/Interface/PlayerMouse.lua:75 mouseMove
At /engine/Interface/PlayerMouse.lua:129 mouseHandleDefault
At /mod/class/Game.lua:1983 fct
At /engine/Mouse.lua:52
Does someone have an idea what i can do?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Stuck in Sludgenest(?)
The exact same thing happened to me. When entering the sludgenest the game loaded for ever and after restarting the game the area was completely black. I ended up having to restore a backup of the savegames I had.
Re: Stuck in Sludgenest(?)
How did you do that? Has it something to do with the dev mode?
Re: Stuck in Sludgenest(?)
If that kind of freeze ever happens again, check the log before restarting ToME for errors. When the screen locks up, there is often still useful error info going into the log. If you start the engine again, it gets overwritten. The above error message is probably happening because the save failed and the level info is blank. The error message from when the save failed is the important one.
That gives me an idea for an addon...

Under Linux (and presumably MacOS) you can simply save a copy of the configuration folder (~/.t-engine). Don't know if something similar is available on Windows.
Edit: that's supposed to be a tilde, not a dash (i.e. the folder you're looking for is in the home folder)

Yeah, you can copy your character's directory. I installed the regular version along with the Steam one on Win7, and they both seem to look at the same directory for settings and such: \Users\[username]\T-Engine\4.0\tome\. Characters have their own subdirectories in the save sub.
I created a dir called "Save backups" in tome and will sometimes copy a char's directory into it. I haven't copied any back yet to see how well they load, as simply playing on Explorer would be so much easier than save scumming, but there are times when I've been curious as to "what if I did X instead?" I just haven't gone back to see. I don't know if there's an online check that invalidates the character or not.

Re: Stuck in Sludgenest(?)
So it seems i can not do anything about my current issue but at least i can prevent future bug-damage of this kind by copying the save games before entering sludgenest. Maybe i will do it even before using zone entrances after the sludge nest, just to make sure.
