Started playing this great game a month ago, I don't know if this first post is a misplaced dumb question or a real bug :)
Problem is, my characters can't damage foes that haven't noticed me yet :

Is this a way to prevent AoE abuse from sneaking folks ?

EDIT : that doesn't happen all the time, for I've been able to defeat the Chrono twins without showing myself, using arcane eye + fireflash + inferno.

You sure they did not have "In Vault" status? It makes monster in vaults passive and immune to everything, until they see you first time.

The reason for vault status is that you can start the Sorcerors Apprentice problem: a monster that you can't see can generate gobs of summoned critters, some of which can teleport out of the vault and cause you a lot of problems that are difficult to solve.

Thanks for these answers, didn't know of the vault status which seems to explain everything !
This character unfortunately died to Celia's friends so I can't test it right now but my new one will :)

I think it is also done to reduce lag. Even on good pc, game starts to slow down when you open particularly big vault with lots of mobs.
